Those close to Kanye West have been very concerned for his mental health this week following a bizarre presidential campaign rally in South Carolina on Sunday and then a string of since-deleted tweets on Monday. Two of his closest friends from growing up in Chicago — Don “Don C” Crawley and John Monopoly — have reportedly joined him in Cody, Wyoming, where he has been living. His manager Bu Thiam is also there with West.
According to PEOPLE, all three of them are “very concerned” about West, but a doctor who assessed him says there’s no immediate health concern.
“They are very concerned about his mental health and taking action,” a source told the outlet. “They are working to get him the help he needs. He’s been seen by a doctor. He was assessed, and the assessment on Monday determined that he did not need immediate hospitalization and that he was in a stable mental state at the time.”
The source went on to add, “Those close to him are concerned, and this is everyone’s top priority to make sure that he’s safe and getting the help he needs.”
He was reportedly going to be evaluated by a doctor again on Wednesday, although the results from that are unknown at this time. West has been working on his new album, which he announced on social media will be released this Friday.
Another one of West’s friends — actor and comic Dave Chappelle — flew to Cody earlier this week to check on him. West shared a video with Chappelle and wrote, “THANK YOU DAVE FOR HOPPING ON A JET TO COME SEE ME DOING WELL DAVE YOU ARE A GOD SEND AND A TRUE FRIEND ALL LOVE.”
West’s wife, Kim Kardashian, has reportedly been trying to get him help for weeks and is now meeting with lawyers to consider her options for divorce. She is very upset with West for sharing a story during his rally about the two allegedly considering having an abortion when Kardashian was pregnant with their first child, North.
“Even if my wife wants to divorce me after this speech she brought North into the world even when I didn’t want to,” West said while getting emotional on stage. “She stood up and she protected that child.”
West previously had a very public breakdown back in 2016, after which he revealed he had been diagnosed with bipolar disease. At the time he said it’s “not a disability, it’s a superpower.”
