Bill Burr On Cancel Culture: 'I Have The Right To Say Whatever I Want'

Comedian Bill Burr is no stranger to cancel culture.

During his stand-up comedy routines, he's fully aware that he might offend someone in the audience.

"I'm not saying that I never have made mistakes, and most times I've, you know, pissed somebody off and made somebody cry," Burr admitted in a new interview on The Pat McAfee Show.

"If they come up to me, and they have a legitimate thing, then I'll apologize to them," he continued. "But I'm not apologizing to a bunch of f---ing people because I told a joke [at a show] that they weren't at."

Cancel culture has been a hotly debated topic among stand-up comics ever since Dave Chappelle made controversial comments about trans individuals in a recent Netflix special.

However, Burr has another connection to cancel culture that some might be unaware of.

Former MMA fighter turned actress Gina Carano believes that she was fired from Lucasfilm due to cancel culture.

The "Star Wars" actress was dropped from season 3 of the Disney+ hit after she continued to post controversial remarks on her social media accounts.

In addition to backing claims of voter fraud, mocking mask-wearing, and promoting her anti-vaxx stance, Carano was subsequently fired after she shared a controversial post comparing conservatives in America to the way Jews were treated during the Holocaust.

The move also prompted Lucasfilm to cancel the upcoming "Rangers of the New Republic" spin-off, in which Carano was set to star.

Although she was also dropped by her agency, UTA, she later partnered with BenShapiro's conservative "The Daily Wire" and has a new movie in the works.

Considering co-star Carano was let go from "The Mandalorian" for her controversial comments, many fans are concerned that Burr might be the next to go.

But Burr, himself, doesn't seem all that worried about being canceled.

"This is a time to be irreverent, and it's also a time to be empathetic, and you have to know how to do both," Burr told McAfee.

"These people that are on the extreme right and left, I think, only represent about 15% of the population," he continued. "And any time you're hardcore or extreme, you inevitably become intolerant."

He added, "I just feel like 85% of the country on the right and the left is kind of sitting there, when are dad and mom going to stop screaming at each other."

He explained that he never tries to put anything "malicious" in his act, and his intention is not to go out and offend anyone.

"I'm not going out there to hurt anybody," he added. "But, like, I also have the right to say whatever I want to say and say it the way I want to say it."
