Kristy, Mary-Anne, Claudia, Stacey, and Dawn are returning to the screen this week. The characters, who come from author Ann M. Martin’s “The Baby-Sitters Club” books, will come to life on Netflix this July.

The show will update the books, which were published throughout the ‘80s and ‘90s, to give them a modern spin. Nevertheless, the stories will still be tween-friendly and appropriate to watch with the family.

So, what else can viewers expect from the new series and the familiar characters?

The show opens up in fictional Stoneybrook, Connecticut. The idyllic town is home to Kristy (Sophie Grace), a sporty and ambitious tween who loves to hang out with her best friend Mary-Anne (Malia Baker). Together, they decide to set up a club with Claudia (Momona Tamada) to make some extra money.

Stacey (Shay Rudolph), a transplant from New York City, and Dawn (Xochitl Gomez), who just moved to the town from California, get in on the action too.

Together, they form “The Baby-Sitters Club.”

The initial episodes of the show will feature strong-willed Kristy coping with the marriage of her mother to a wealthy man. Just as in the series of books, Mary-Anne is contending with her super strict father. Stacey copes with moving to a smaller town and hiding her health status from her new friends.

Updates to the characters introduce new depth, including Claudia learning about her Japanese grandmother’s childhood years spent in an internment camp.

The cast also includes Alicia Silverstone, Mark Feuerstein, Mark Evan Jackson, Jessica Elaina Eason, Takayo Fischer, and more.

The first 10 episodes will feature storylines straight from the series of books. The first book, “Kristy’s Great Idea,” will likely be the subject of the first episode. The series will also include episodes based on “Boy-Crazy Stacey,” “Claudia and Mean Janine,” “Claudia and the Phantom Caller,” “Dawn and the Impossible Three,” “Kristy’s Big Day,” and more.

Rachel Shukert, the showrunner, told Entertainment Weekly about the characters, “Just bringing them into modernity was really interesting, thinking about how we could tell these stories through a modern lens.”

The show’s creators were adamant about keeping the characters true to their personalities in the books while also making some important updates so the characters are suited for a modern audience.

The book series has been featured on screen in the past. In 1990, HBO brought the books to a short-lived series. In 1995, “The Baby-Sitters Club" movie was adapted for TV and featured Rachael Leigh Cook, Schuyler Fisk, and Larisa Oleynik.

Netflix will drop 10 episodes of “The Baby-Sitters Club” on Friday, July 3.
