The Duggar family has been a public spectacle on TLC for over 15 years. Jed Duggar, 21, is following in father Jim Bob Duggar’s footsteps by running for state representative in Arkansas House District 89.
As part of his campaign, Jed has occasionally updated his Instagram page to inform voters about his platform. Jed even has a website he uses to promote his political career.
One of the big problems? He hasn’t built a strong platform based on actionable goals. Additionally, many of those keeping up with his campaign have criticized Jed’s lack of life experience and lack of education.
Now, he’s remaining silent on current issues, including the spread of coronavirus and racism.
Jed and his family are known for their conservative viewpoints, so it should not come as a surprise that his platform is built on religion and anti-abortion rhetoric. Those running for office are expected to share more information about their platform as the election nears, but Jed has not shared his specific plans.
Jed is also quiet about racism, in spite of the fact that sisters Jinger Vuolo, Jessa Seewald, and Jill Dillard have all posted their support of Black Americans during protests and calls for action.
Jed’s critics point out that most politicians and political hopefuls are discussing racism on social media, but he has not addressed it.
In November, Jed posted, “I’m announcing my candidacy for Arkansas State Representative District 89 in Springdale. I’d appreciate your prayers, support, and your vote!” He also added a list of his priorities, which he listed as “Pro-Life. Pro Second Amendment. Pro Religious Liberty. Combat the Opioid Crisis. Lower Taxes. More Jobs & Growth. Strong Economy.”
His website also lists these values and his hope for the future. For instance, he proposes faith-based treatment to handle the opioid crisis.
Jed has not listed racial injustice as a value on his website or mentioned the current events on social media at all. Of course, he has not been silent altogether. On June 16, Jed posted a photo of himself playing golf with the caption, “Excited to welcome @topgolf to Northwest Arkansas!”
Of course, not everybody is upset that Jed isn’t discussing these issues. Many of the comments on his Instagram posts seem to be women interested in courting Jed, and others support his run for the position.
Jed is running against current State Representative Megan Godfrey. Godfrey has held the position since January 2019.
In contrast to Jed, Godfrey has a B.A. in Spanish and an M.A. in elementary education. She also has professional experience working in education and now politics. Godfrey recently posted a picture to Instagram featuring “Black Lives Matter” written on the ground. Her caption shows support for the cause.
Additionally, Godfrey’s website mentions a need to end racial injustice and calls for diversity. Education is also a priority for the representative. Jed’s website does not mention his stance on public education, but the Duggar family is a proponent of religious homeschooling.
