Tragedy struck a high school in Michigan on Tuesday, November 30, 2021, when a shooting erupted at a high school just north of Detroit.
According to authorities, they have taken a 15-year-old sophomore student into custody. They say that he fatally shot three students and injured six other people, including one teacher.
The Oakland County Sheriff’s Office revealed that they received reports of an active shooter at 12:51 local time at the Oxford High School in Oxford Township. The suburb is located roughly 40 miles north of Detroit.

According to Oakland County Undersheriff Mike McCabe, they still don’t have a motive for the attack.
McCabe revealed that “the whole thing lasted five minutes” and that the student fired approximately fifteen to twenty shots during the attack. One semi-automatic handgun was recovered at the scene.
McCabe added that dispatchers received more than a hundred 911 calls to report the shooting and that officers were able to arrive at the school “within minutes” to take the suspect into custody.
He added that the student, whose name was not revealed to the public, “didn’t give us any resistance when he was taken into custody.” He was reportedly not wearing any body armor. The student asked for a lawyer and refused to answer questions.
During the crisis, students were sheltered in place in locked classrooms before being relocated to the parking lot of a nearby store after police could secure the school and make sure the threat was contained. Parents were directed to a nearby community center to pick up their children. Other schools in the area were also put under lockdown for safety purposes, although authorities believe that the suspect acted alone.

Students took to Twitter to post videos from inside Oxford High School during the lockdown after shots were fired. Many took this as a moment to call for stronger gun reform laws.
One person tweeted a photo of a headline from the satirical news site The Onion, reading, “‘No Way To Prevent This,’ Says Only Nation Where This Regularly Happens.” The person commented, “Yet another school shooting, this time at Oxford high school. Hopefully one day this picture gets outdated.”
Grassroots political organization Occupy Democrats tweeted the news, writing, “BREAKING: Police in Michigan now have a suspect in custody after at least four people were shot and injured with a handgun at Oxford High School. EMS units, SWAT, and air support responded to the scene. RT IF YOU THINK WE NEED NEW GUN LAWS NOW!”
People chimed in on all sides of the issue. One person commented on the tweet, writing, “We need a National gun Law.. Background checks, age limits, gun safety courses, Licensing and Gun registration.”
“Prayers to the wounded,” another wrote. “Gun laws will get talked about again for a couple of days and then all forgotten until the next shooting.”
“This is where I live,” another shared. “Oxford is a very small and tight community and the high school receives a ton of support. While I am not a student, driving home with 30+ cops cars racing north was terrifying. It’s always said, but I never would have thought this would happen here.”
