Selena Gomez just shocked the internet with a surprise announcement yesterday on June 4 2020 telling her followers that she would be giving her Instagram account to “Black Lives Matter” activists and prominent racial justice figures.

For entire days at a time, the famous Disney channel actress will be giving full control of her Instagram account to those who expressly support the Black protests and movements going on in the US.

This announcement was made on the “Natural” singer’s profile with a caption sharing how she viewed this as the best way to bring awareness to racism going on.

The controversial statement made by the 27-year-old pop star has been making headlines as a rallying cry for celebrities everywhere to use their popular platforms as a means to bring awareness to important issues.

Selena captioned her post saying: “After thinking about how best to use my social media, I decided that we all need to hear more from Black voices.”

The “Kiss & Tell” singer went on to say that she hasn’t been able to come up with words fitting enough to talk about what has transpired. So she decided to give the mic to the social justice groups themselves.

Alicia Garza Goes Live

While some have considered this a major security issue considering how her social media could potentially be used improperly, those fears were put to rest after Selena introduced her first new account user 5 hours ago, and their credentials check out.

The social activist who has first been featured goes by the name of Alicia Garza who also happens to be the co-founder of #BlackLivesMatter.

Selena introduced Alicia by talking about a few of her accomplishments and mentioned that she has her own podcast.

“Alicia is taking over my account today!” Selena said.

Speaking Outside The Narrative

This isn’t the first time Selena has created a media buzz, in fact during a recent interview with Interview Magazine (which also featured the luscious showstopper wearing outfits and sporting a look like never before seen on her) she explained that the media has often portrayed her in completely the wrong light.

She said, “I had to start opening up because people were taking away my narrative and it was killing me.”

It would appear that Selena has carried this attitude into her social activities considering her latest social justice support on Instagram.

Many fans commented sharing how much they appreciated such a transparent approach to supporting the Black community and for being so “anti-racist” as they frequently put.

Although this is an unprecedented move for the “Rare” artist, Selena has been quite active as a philanthropist since she was about 16. She partnered with UNICEF and she officially became an ambassador for the charitable organization a year later in 2019.

As Selena fittingly stated when expressing her support for the Black community, “Too many black lives have been taken from us for far too long. They deserve better. They deserve to be heard.“
