Vanessa Morgan who plays Toni Topaz on Netflix’s “Riverdale” is speaking out about the way her character and other black characters on the show are written. The actress took to Twitter this week to share her concerns with how people of color are represented on the popular teen drama. “Tired of how black people are portrayed in the media,” started the singer. “Tired of us being portrayed as thugs, dangerous or angry scary people. Tired of us also being used as sidekick non dimensional characters to our white leads. Or only used in the ads for diversity but not actually in the show.”

The 28-year-old actress let her fans know that she was no longer keeping quiet. She followed up her post with a response to a fan who tweeted, “imagine they’re getting so much more bang for their buck bc ur part of an lgbt storyline too, double the diversity – DOUBLE UR PAYCHECK IMO.” The actress agreed with her supporter and elaborated on the topic. “Lmao too bad I’m the only black series regular but also paid the least girl i could go on for days.” She didn’t stop there, she called out the shows writers for making her the “token biracial bisexual”.

Her Co-stars Supported Her

Morgan received support from her fellow co-stars like Lili Reinhart who wrote, “We love you V. And support you 100000%.” The actress acknowledged her co-stars in a sweet tweet that read, “My role on Riverdale has nothing to do with my fellow castmates/friends. They don’t write the show. So, no need to attack them, they don’t call the shots & I know they have my back.” Another co-star supported Morgan’s tweets with her own insinuating comment. “Don’t even get me started with how Riverdale treated the Pussycats,” wrote Asha Bromfield who plays Melody Jones, 1/3 of the musical trio Josie and the Pussycats.

Some Even Shared Their Own Complaints About The Show

Her tweet went on to share how she felt about the lines written for her character. “We had so much more to contribute than standing in the background and adding sass to a storyline. I stand with you.” One fan agreed that Josie and her girls had it rough. “SIDE KICK ONE DIMENSIONAL CHARACTERS TO WHITE LEADS GET EM you and Ashleigh always deserved so much more,” wrote the fan. They were referring to actress Ashleigh Murray who played Josie and the rest of the pussycats who slowly began losing more and more airtime as season one progressed.

The band unfortunately lost out in a big way when at the end of season three, Murry moved on to a main role in the “Riverdale” spinoff “Katy Keene starring Lucy Hale of “Pretty Little Liars” fame. Morgan’s frustrations with lack of proper representation of black people on TV comes at a time where black people are fighting for equality. The actress has participated in many of the Black Lives Matter social media campaigns and has openly shared content surrounding protests and unjust activities towards people of color.
