Julianne Hough and Brooks Laich announced their separation yesterday after months of speculation. While some Hollywood couples were quarantining on separate sides of the house, Hough and Laich were doing it from separate states.

A source close the pair says they "trying to finding themselves separate from one another and deal with any issues they’ve faced that were exasperated while married.”

The pro dancer began dating hockey player Laich in early 2014. They would become engaged the next year and finally wed in 2017.

The tipster told UsWeekly that “Julianne and Brooks’ split was a long time coming."

"They argued a lot and just had different viewpoints on important issues...there’s still a love there, but not in a romantic sense.”

Hough, 31, and Laich, 36, gave a joint statement to PEOPLE on May 29th, saying their decision to separate was made "lovingly and carefully."

"We share an abundance of love and respect for one another and will continue to lead with our hearts from that place," the couple said. "We kindly request your compassion and respect for our privacy moving forward."

An insider over there was rather adamant about the relationship being over. In their words, "it's over, it's been over for a while, and it's time to just call it what it is — and it is over."

They added that "there is honestly no ill will."

He loves her. She loves him. I can truly say they always will. But they both understand they are not meant to go through their lives as husband and wife to each other."

Hough and Laich also appeared to be on different wavelengths when it came to sex.

In an interview with Women's Health last fall, Hough said she didn't reveal her sexual orientation to her husband until after they were already married.

“I [told him], ‘You know I’m not straight, right?’ And he was like, ‘I’m sorry, what?’ I was like, ‘I’m not. But I choose to be with you,’ she told the mag.

In January, Laich said he wanted to "really explore learning about sexuality" in 2020. The comment was made on his "How Men Think" podcast, but he had to come back at a later date to clarify what he actually meant.

"I don’t mean if I’m gay or straight, I mean, like, in my sexual relationship. What is my sexuality? What am I craving, what are my desires and what are my wife’s?”

Laich went on to credit wife for inspiring him to get to such a place.

"When you say sexuality, culture or society thinks it's gay or straight. Some people are figuring that out, that's fine...through doing this show and also through my wife, who's exploring this as well, and shared a lot of this with me and has perked my interest in it."
