“Teen Mom: OG” star Maci Bookout is being called out for her latest mistake on this week’s episode of the popular MTV show. The 28-year-old is under fire for putting her eldest son Bentley on a 1,000 calorie diet. Bookout, in an attempt to support her son on his wrestling team has allowed Bentley to maintain the low-calorie diet. The pre-teen wants to compete in the 70lb weight class, unfortunately, his last two tournaments he was in the 75lb weight class. According to fans, this would be fine if Bentley was older but at 11 the opinionated social media followers feel like Bookout is floating into bad mom territory.
During the episode, the mom of three is seen discussing the weight class with Bentley, reminding him how hard it may be to maintain a “strict diet” so he can wrestle in the class he wants. Still, fans were appalled by Bookout’s willingness to allow her son to supposedly starve himself for sports. The outrage moved over to Twitter with one fan claiming to be very concerned because she too is a mom of a boy. “I have a son the same age as Bentley and I could not imagine telling him it is okay to lose weight at his age. He’s a growing boy and his body needs those calories and nutrients. Let him be little.”
The reality star was not in the mood to tolerate any negative talk around her children and their actions. She released a statement making it very clear she is not and has no intentions of putting her child in danger for a sport. “In reference to tonight’s episode — I have never and will never convince Bentley to ‘cut’ weight,” she clarified. “After wrestling his first 2 tournaments in the 75lb class weighing in at 72-he came to me & said he wanted to wrestle at 70. I told him that’s fine, but you WILL NOT ‘cut’ weight.”
The ‘Things That Matter” clothing owner went on to detail that she actually set up a great eating schedule for Bentley so he can lose weight the right way. “I will lay out a healthy scheduled diet for u, u can eat salads, grilled chicken, veggies, good carbs-instead of pizza, Doritos & candy bars. Through the season, he decided he didn’t like it-I told him that’s okay! U can go back to usual and wrestle at 75 which is what he did.”
During the episode, the young mom shared that wrestling has been a “great outlet” for Bentley’s mental health. He has a lot to deal with in regards to his father Ryan Edwards being in and out of prison and on and off drugs. She even went on to share that she explained to Bentley that he doesn’t necessarily have to cut food at his age, he can rely on the good old fashion way. “Lots of water and workouts to actually cut out weight.”
