The “Freak Nasty” rapper, whose song “Savage” recently became a viral hit among fans on TikTok, told People that her mom Holly Thomas would’ve been proud to see her daughter graduate, and that’s exactly what Megan plans on doing.
Megan is enrolled in an online course at Texas Southern University, and while her demanding schedule hasn’t made it easy for her to study as much as she’d like, it goes without saying that she’s going above and beyond to make sure she finishes all her coursework.
‘I want to get my degree because I really want my mom to be proud,’ she told the publication. ‘She saw me going to school before she passed.’
The 25-year-old said she is expected to graduate next year – and when she does, she’s going to throw an enormous party to celebrate the big occasion.
It hasn’t been easy for Megan, whose mother passed away from a brain tumor in March 2019. Megan’s mom had managed her daughter’s career up until her demise.
The “Big Ol’ Freak” chart-topper was rocked with more devastating news when she learned her great-grandmother died two weeks after Thomas.
‘I want my big mama to be proud. She saw me going to school before she passed,’ Megan continued to tell People.
‘My grandmother that’s still alive used to be a teacher, so she’s on my butt about finishing school. I’m doing it for me, but I’m also doing it for the women in my family who made me who I am today.’
The Houston native makes it clear that she hasn’t allowed fame and success get to her head – she’s still determined to work hard for everything she has, which were qualities her family was always adamant on.
She explained: ‘I literally watched my mom and my grandmother get up and go to work every single day. My big mama owned three houses in South Park [Houston]. She was going hard, working to provide for our family, so I’ve always seen her drive.’
Megan was just 15 when her father passed away, and while money problems were persistent, her mother and grandmother always shielded her from knowing about any of it. ‘We could’ve been struggling, but they made it work,’ she said.
Megan recently released her EP titled “Suga,” which features the hit song “Savage.”
And following the success she’s had in the past year, she’s finally expected to release her debut album later this year.
No word on when the project will drop, though, considering the current global pandemic.
