Ironically, the Queen of England chose to have her April 21st birthday on the same day the queen of pop was due in a stateside court. This presented a natural window for the Britney Army to bring up a historic moment in the career of HRH Spears – when she almost claimed another crown.
A lively dialog then surrounded a time when Brit was said to have been “quite friendly with Prince William.”
She said it, not us!
In 2002, PEOPLE reported “that Prince William stood [Britney] up after she arranged a rendezvous with him by e-mail.” The mag’s write-up detailed a then-upcoming talk show appearance where Spears would make the reveal for herself.
A 20-year-old Spears got a touch squirmy with show host Frank Skinner, saying “it was just like, all blown out of proportion.”
“We exchanged e-mails for a little bit, and he was supposed to come and see me somewhere, but it didn’t work out.”
“You were blown out by Prince William?” Skinner asked.
Defeated, Spears offered a sad shrug. “Yeah. He’s a busy guy.”
After the 18-year-old clip was resurrected on Tuesday, one fan expressed their happiness over the non-date.
“Thank God she didn’t pursue that,” they tweeted. “If she did, not to sound dark, but she probably wouldn’t be with us today.”
Another agreed, but with an edit.
“She would be, but the media [scrutiny] would be far more intense than any royal has ever [had].”
In a separate tweet, this same user realized the royal relationship would have ultimately kept Spears from making the future, fan-favorite albums of “Blackout, Circus, Femme Fatale,” and “Glory.”
A fourth hopped in the discussion to share their admiration of Spears’ sweetness.
“What I love about her,” they wrote, “is that she will never have a rant on anybody. She is soooooo sweet that she said ‘he is a busy man’ that’s class right there. A total, true QUEEN.”
The conversation just wouldn’t have come full circle without mention of an old conspiracy theory – that Spears found out Prince William was “like a lizard man, so that’s when [she] decided not to meet him.”
Maybe she prefers snakes?
Romance aside: Spears’ love for London goes beyond her countless soldout shows at places like its O2 Arena.
“In wartime Britain,” the Daily Mail once said, Spears’ maternal grandmother Lilian Bridges “danced the jitterbug at the Royal Opera House before falling in love with an American (soldier).”
They eventually married and settled in the United States where they had Britney’s mother, Lynne Spears, who eventually returned to England to attend ~~college~~ university.
Fast-forward a few years, where Britney, now 27, is allegedly “desperate” to meet the monarch while on tour.
“Britney’s schedule has been crazy from the minute she arrived in Britain,” a source said, “But no way does she want to leave without visiting the queen.”
This was during the 2009 ‘Circus’ tour, widely known as “the comeback” tour – but she doesn’t really like it when people call it a comeback.
11 years later (in 2018), Britney took her sons on a tour of London, at one point making a low-key visit to Buckingham Palace – so low-key they went virtually unnoticed. But prior to that and the ‘Circus’ stuff…
In 2007, the pop star adopted a little Yorkshire Terrier dog she later named “London” – the same dog you saw in tragic tabloid pics. And since we’re in the neighborhood…
A simple, passing line from a same-time magazine article presented the possibility that her grandmother’s heritage is what sparked Brit’s “concerning” usage of a British accent.
While this made sense within the article’s context, it was never confirmed outside of its origin. Like Britney once said, “it was just like, all blown out of proportion.”
