Singer Adele just changed Spotify in a big way!

Adele recently dropped her latest album, “30,” which consists of 12 new tracks for her fans to fall in love with. However, Adele had a special request for Spotify when she agreed to let them stream her newest album, and it has to do with the controversial shuffle button.

Adele Just Switched Up Spotify’s Whole Game

When fans listen to an artist’s album on Spotify, the default setting was to shuffle album tracks in random order. However, Adele carefully put her 12 songs in the order that she wanted them to be heard.

On Saturday, November 20, Spotify confirmed that they disabled the shuffle button as its default option, which means that tracks will now automatically be played in the order that the artist has created for each of their albums.

“This was the only request I had in our ever changing industry!” Adele tweeted alongside a news article addressing the change.

She continued, “We don’t create albums with so much care and thought into our track listing for no reason. Our art tells a story and our stories should be listened to as we intended. Thank you Spotify for listening.”

“Anything for you,” Spotify replied with a prayer-hands emoji.

How Do Fans Feel About The Spotify Switch-Up?

There were fans on both sides of the issue.

“I can tell stories too,” one fan wrote. “Why is your version more important than mine?”

Another replied, “Because it’s her album then her version is the one that important. If you release an album and Adele listen to it in shuffle THEN you can talk about your version.”

“Apple Music didn’t cave to this really silly demand,” another noted. “Isn’t an album more like a book? If I want to skip to the end that’s on me. No harm to the artist. I’m still listening after all. This really makes me less of a fan. No loss to you I guess. There’s millions more.”

“Yeah... I think your explanation actually invalidates your point,” someone else countered. “People can still shuffle the album; it's just not the default option. And yes, you can skip to the end of a book if you want, but wouldn't it be frustrating if by default you had to read the chapters out of order?”

What Do Fans Think Of Adele’s New Album?

Although fans seem divided about Spotify’s removal of the Shuffle button, the comments for the official music video of her new hit single “Easy On Me,” seemed much more positive.

“Her vocals are so strong and she’s so expressive in her singing that just listening to this makes me teary eyed for no other reason than how beautiful and emotional the song is,” one fan wrote.

“Most definitely one of the most beautiful and heart touching songs she's ever created,” another said.

One fan wrote, “She is phenomenal. Her voice and lyrics are heartfelt and resonate. One of the best vocalist of modern times.”

“I've listened to this song over 100 times and it's so good,” another added.

Although fans aren’t quite sure how to feel about Spotify changing the default setting on their shuffle button, at least fans seem to agree that Adele’s new album is just as well-received as her early hits.
