Kate Chastain has been a mainstay on ‘Below Deck’ since 2014, serving as Captain Lee Rosbach’s chief stew for six seasons before abruptly announcing her departure from the seafaring program in February. In a new interview with HollywoodLife Rosbach discusses how shocked he was to receive the call regarding the departure from Chastain, how the impromptu loss of his closest crewmate has been affecting him personally, and share his thoughts regarding if she may ever return to the hit program.
“That was out of left field. I did not see that coming at all. I was totally blown away,” Rosbach told the publication during a video interview on April 20.
“Kate called me and it was a bittersweet thing. She let me know that she wasn’t going to come back, but she thought it was time to move on. She’s got bigger and better things to do and I was happy for her,” he continued to explain about the shocking situation.
“But, I was sad in the same breath because she’s a valued member of my team and she’s a valued member of ‘Below Deck’ and the show, so, big shoes to fill for somebody, or try to do it, yeah. I miss Kate,” Rosbach added.
The Captain then explained that with Chastain gone he’d need a replacement to fill her position, “I’m looking for somebody that has that work ethic [like Kate’s], that has the proper attitude towards sub-ordinance. Someone who isn’t on a power trip,” he explained.
“Quick witted, can think on their feet and [someone] that I don’t have to babysit. Here’s your job, here’s your tools, now go get your job done. If you keep coming to me for every little thing. And if I have to do my job and your job then I obviously don’t need you, so I’m looking for somebody who can stand on their own and function well,” Rosbach said, mentioning that Chastain hadn’t offered any suggestions about a replacement before her departure.
As for his thoughts on if Chastain will ever return to her position on ‘Below Deck,’ Rosbach isn’t very optimistic for it, but says nobody knows what the future could potentially bring, “I really couldn’t say, I think she’s grown past that, I really do. As much as I would love her to come back. But who knows, maybe we’ll see her in some form or another. I really don’t know. It wouldn’t be the first time we’ve been surprised”
