Having kept a relatively low-profile in recent years, West has shed light on the fact that he once struggled to cope with alcoholism despite having described himself as being a ‘functioning alcoholic’ at the time.
During his interview for the respectable publication, the father-of-four reveals how being blackballed in Hollywood and not being nominated for a Grammy for Album of the Year contributed to his struggles.
‘Well, it’s good that we found out about all of those awards shows that partially led me to alcoholism,’ Kanye expressed. ‘Whistle been blown, you know? Imagine My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy and Watch the Throne [being eligible] the same year and neither of them being nominated for Album of the Year.
‘Imagine doing The Life of Pablo and driving down the road and never hearing none of those songs on the radio and your wife and your daughter are in the car.’
Drinking Grey Goose and orange juice in the morning became a way for West to escape all of his problems – at least until he finally decided to ditch the drinking once turning to Christ.
When the 42-year-old started to resist the urge of having another drink, there was a particular quote that stuck in his mind, which he says has helped him tremendously whenever he would have the third for alcohol.
‘One day I was in my office working on the couture collection, and there was some Grey Goose in the fridge and I was just going to get a daytime drink.’
‘And I looked and thought, “Devil, you’re not going to beat me today.” That one statement is like a tattoo.’
The process of not wanting to drink in the morning was hard for the “Good Life” rapper, particularly because he felt as if a lot of things were weighing on his shoulder. West did however come to the conclusion that he needed to help himself because though he was a ‘functioning alcoholic,’ things could have eventually derailed.
But fortunately, the “Faded” star was able to pull himself together.
‘I haven’t had a drink since I realized I needed to take it day by day, but I never owned up, or was even told, “Hey, you’re a functioning alcoholic.”
‘People have called me a crazy person, people have called me everything—but not a functioning alcoholic. And I would be drinking orange juice and Grey Goose in the morning.’
West, who is married to Kim Kardashian, shares four children with her: North, Saint, Chicago, and Psalm.
