Scarlett Johansson is an actress whose acting reputation precedes her. From her debut in Hollywood, the actor has charmed the public with her talents and on-screen performances. Her body of works includes “Lost in Translation,” “Girl with a Pearl Earring,” among many others.
She is also a mainstay in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, depicting the role of Black Widow, a character that has garnered her global acclaim. A Hollywood success, Scarlett is not only a superstar – but has been tagged as a sex symbol on many occasions.
Her dazzling and beautiful looks have brought her many admirers. Among the lot is the controversial director Woody Allen who once described the actress as “sexually overwhelming.”
Although the actress is a marvel to behold, many felt the comment was not appropriate coming from him. Read below to find out her reaction to Allen’s remarks.
Scarlett Johansson Reactions
For reasons best known to Allen, he has chosen to add lewd remarks whenever he had the opportunity to talk about the actress. According to the Independent, he described the actress as gifted, beautiful, and sexually radioactive.
His statements did not sit well with the public. Many critics and fans felt that the actor’s sexual controversy issues should be his focus. Also, his comments seemed suspicious as this was not the first time.
Some years before that, he made similar remarks regarding her sexuality. “It’s very hard to be extra witty around a sexually overwhelming, beautiful young woman who is wittier than you are. Anytime I say anything amusing, Scarlett tops me,” he said as per New York magazine.
In 2006, Blackfilm.com quizzed Johansson about Allen’s “overwhelming sexuality” comments. Her reaction showed her loss for words, and it took a while for her to riposte. Ultimately, she took the remark as a compliment and directed the conversation from her to the director’s early morning quirk of eating muffins.
How Johansson And Allen Are Connected
Allen and Johansson have had many encounters together. One of such instances was on the set of “Match Point.” The director had previously picked Kate Winslet for the role, but she had to leave for personal reasons.
At that time, that project was in danger of failing if they got no replacement. Johansson landed the role and quickly impressed everyone with her talents. The pair grew a bond that saw her star once more in a new movie.
The next time they met on set was for Allen’s 2006’s “Scoop,” after Johansson requested a new collaboration. Allen penned the script in less than a year and invited her to take the leading female role once more.
To date, Johansson sees Allen as a good friend who supported her acting career before her stardom.
Allen Faces Sexual Assault And Pedophilia Accusations
Throughout Allen’s career, he has released many critically acclaimed movies such as “Annie Hall,” “Manhattan,” “A Midsummer Night’s Sex Comedy,” and “Midnight in Paris.” His role in the film industry has impacted all sectors within and garnered him much fame.
However, his storied career got embroiled in controversy due to several allegations about assaulting youngsters. It got so bad that Allen was later reportedly accused of exhibiting inappropriate fatherly behavior to his adopted child.
Ultimately, he was charged to court, but the investigation resulted in a dead-end. Many years later, the alleged victim, Dylan Farrow, wrote an article where she narrated the assault and brought it back to the media’s spotlight.
Allen denied the accusation once more, vehemently voicing his innocence. However, many are taking the claims seriously, and it seems like the director’s respect in the industry is beginning to dwindle.
Scarlett Johansson Still Supports Allen
For many, it seems Johansson still holds Allen in high esteem despite the controversies around his life. When quizzed about his ordeal, Johansson only had positive words to say.
“I love Woody. I believe him, and I would work with him anytime,” Johansson told The Hollywood Reporter.
She continued: “I see Woody whenever I can, and I have had a lot of conversations with him about it. I have been very direct with him, and he’s direct with me. He maintains his innocence, and I believe him.”
Her support for the embattled director brought massive backlash from her fans. Subsequently, the actress came out to refine her comments.
“I don’t know – I feel the way I feel about it. It’s my experience,” she told Vanity Fair. “I don’t know any more than any other person knows. I only have proximity with Wood. He’s a friend of mine. But I have no other insight other than my relationship with him.”
