Taking more than a cursory glance at Tom Hardy's career, one might say that the actor has done well for himself.
Since his debut breakout part in Ridley Scott's war thriller "Black Hawk Down," the actor has subsequently acted in several blockbusters, which all earned him critical acclaim and fame.
Over the years, he got type-casted to just action thriller flicks. Ironically, the fault does not come from producers and directors but Hardy himself. He bombed his audition for a romantic drama film in his early years in the film industry.
Years after, he landed a rom-com role but felt uncomfortable all through the filming process. Since then, he has not looked back, sticking to acting in action flicks. Read on to find more information.
Hardy Bombed His 'Pride And Prejudice' Audition
At the start of his career, Hardy wanted to be the versatile actor that could play all parts. However, after blasting the audition for Joe Wright's romantic drama film "Pride and Prejudice," he gave up on being a character that swoons the ladies.
In his abysmal audition for the lead role, Mr. Darcy, a member of the decision panel, hit him with a harsh remark.
"Babe, every woman in the world has an impression of who Mr. Darcy is, and you are just not it," the person said at that time.
The audition left an unshaken impression on him as he felt disappointed at how badly he portrayed the role. Per The Telegraph, Hardy recalled the moment as very painful.
"That hurt, that really hurt," Hardy said. "I'd worn a blue shirt and jeans and a blue blazer and was acting my best Hugh Grant impression. But now I was back to playing the wonky skewiff-teeth kid with the bowlegs."
After then, he tagged himself as an actor that does not fit into a romantic lead. He has mainly focused on action roles that have a little bit of dark and light.
Hardy Was Uncomfortable On The Set Of 'This Means War'
A few years later, Hardy changed his mind and tried another crack at a romantic role. At that time, he was already well-known, so landing the role came easy due to his growing reputation.
The actor featured in "This Means War" alongside co-stars Reese Witherspoon and Chris Pine. In the movie, Hardy played the role of a love-struck CIA agent who was competing with Pine for Witherspoon's affection.
At that time, the actor admitted that he played the role because he had not tried it before. "I love to do things I hadn't done before," according to a report by USA Today.
However, acting the role was not comfortable for the "Inception" star. In short, the actor felt miserable doing it. After this, he shut the door to portraying romantic roles for good.
Hardy Believes He Is The Stark Contrast Of His Masculine Roles
Hardy's body of work includes "StarTrek: Nemesis," "Warrior," The Revenant," "Mad Max: Fury Road," "Inception," "The Dark Knight Rises," "Dunkirk," "Venom."
Most of these roles played him as a masculine hunk - who is hardly vulnerable to any form of destruction or emotion. Although he made his name acting tough, violent characters, he still fancies a career change even though it has not worked out previously.
According to The Mirror, Hardy said, "I think all the baddies and all those sorts of 'grrrrr' characters that I've played, I'm not that. It's actually much harder to mimic things that are soft and nice and intimate if you don't grow up in that way."
"Now I'm getting older - these things are becoming less scary."
Hardy starring in another rom-com seems like an unlikely probability. Nevertheless, the future can hold something different.
Tom Hardy Doesn't Fancy Playing Lead Roles
Although Hardy has starred as the lead actor in a couple of successful blockbusters, he is not interested in competing for such roles. As per LA Times, he is content with being an ordinary cast, away from the lead role attention.
I'm just Tommy who does his thing," Hardy said. "I'm just doing a bit of acting now and then. It's like I came to deliver a pizza, and I got lucky."
Helgeland, who directed "Legend," which featured Hardy in two leading twin roles, also affirmed his view. He explained that the star does not desire leading roles as it is too dull for him.
Regardless, fans are content with whatever part he plays in his movies, as his unique talent always makes him fun to watch. Away from acting life, Hardy has three children and wants family time as a priority these days.
