Many people still watch reruns of the popular NBC comedy The Office even years after the show wrapped almost seven years ago, and with good reason. The show, which was an adaptation of the British series of the same name, starred hilarious funnyman Steve Carell as the lovably inept Michael Scott, regional manager of the Dunder Mifflin Paper Company in Scranton, Pa. The series went on to win five Primetime Emmy Awards and Carell received a Golden Globe for his portrayal of Micheal Scott.

Rounding out the cast of the office was John Krasinski, Rainn Wilson and Jenna Fischer. Another cast member, Mindy Kaling, was originally hired to write for The Office and perform minimally. However, her presence on the show was so popular she became one of the most beloved characters of the series. Her portrayal of spoiled customer service representative Kelly Kapoor was equal parts hilarious and endearing, as she fit right in with the ensemble cast of crazy office workers at the Scranton branch.

Bigger And Better Things

Kaling would go on to star in 2012's The Mindy Project, a series written and produced by Kaling herself. The new series found her in the role of Dr. Mindy Lahiri and although the series began on Fox it was eventually cancelled before moving to Hulu and completing its run in 2017. Kaling has also gone on to work on other projects like the animated movies Despicable Me and Wreck-It Ralph as well as feature films The Night Before and A Wrinkle in Time.

How Does She Treat Her Staff?

In 2013 Kaling was named one of Time Magazine's 100 Most Influential People, so it would stand to reason that she employs a team of people to help her with her projects. Now, according to Showbiz Cheatsheet Kaling's assistant Elena Dole is speaking out about what it's like to work with the award winning writer/producer.

“She trusts the people around her,” she said. “If she’s read a script and thinks, ‘Hmm, I just don’t know,’ she’ll give it to me. She always asks our opinions.”

Kaling doesn’t stop there. She seems to have an almost maternal quality towards her staff, caring enough to make sure they’re eating well.

Passing The Torch

“Last week, we were kind of quarantined [but] hadn’t done the whole lockdown yet. She made a full brisket from scratch for us.”

Kaling also offers sound advice for her staff, and she imparts knowledge that they can use while maneuvering in the business. And Dole is particularly receptive, as she counts one of the favorite things about her job as being in Kaling's presence.

If you’re delivering tough news, there’s no reason to back off,” Dole said. “Women in all [industries] sometimes aren’t taken seriously. People take Mindy seriously. It’s impressive.”
