Despite being home to beaches and larger cities, South Carolina is among a handful of states without a mandatory stay-at-home order, which has led to numerous frustrated social media posts from Cameron Eubanks of ‘Southern Charm,’ including a recent post on Instagram Stories. “While I’m on here let me say it again, let me scream it from the … rooftops. Governor Henry McMaster, what’s going on? What are we waiting for? We are one of I think seven states now left in the United States of America that have not issued a mandatory stay at home order. Honestly, I get speechless when I think about it because it’s like all the common sense has just been thrown out the window.”
Eubanks continued in a story appearing in People magazine by adding, “The epidemiologists and scientists are predicting that the coronavirus is on track to kill 200,000 and they are saying that is an optimistic estimate. Some models show it in the millions. So for those people wanting to go to Lowe’s to get flowers to plant in their yard. Or you’re bored at home and you wanna get out of the house and wanna go to Target or Walmart. You are literally helping kill other human beings. And does that sound extreme? Yes, it does. And I want it to sound extreme because it’s the … truth.”
“And for those that want to compare this to the flu, the CDC estimated that in 2018-2019 the flu killed approximately 34,200 Americans.” Cameran also shared a Change.org petition urging McMaster to shut down the state. Eubanks also posted about how nurses are reaching out to her and sharing their stories dealing with the virus. She wrote over the post, “If you think this is a big conspiracy please unfollow me. Utter stupidity. Do y’all think the hundreds of nurses writing me are lying???”
Eubanks, the mom a 2-year-old Palmer with husband Jason Wimberly – has been on ‘Southern Charm’ for six seasons. She does the narration for the show, and also shares her life as a new mom to daughter Palmer. Her husband rarely makes an appearance. The show is set in Charleston, a large city with a diverse population set on the Atlantic Ocean. Much of the city’s business ventures are hospitality-related, given its rich history, including nearby Fort Sumter. Filming for the upcoming season had not yet begun when the coronavirus pandemic took hold in the U.S.
Eubanks is likely particularly concerned because her husband is a physician and in the front lines of the pandemic. While South Carolina Gov. Henry McMaster did tell citizens on Friday, “Stay at home if you don’t have to be out. Stay at home and be a good neighbor, remind other people about social distancing and other things that are required,” for Eubanks, it wasn’t enough. “I am embarrassed and appalled that @govhenrymcmaster is continuing to put countless lives at risk in the state of South Carolina.”
