Now that they've made their exit from the royal family, Harry and Meghan Markle are apparently planting to take some time away from the spotlight. According to The Mirror, their decision to take a break caught some people by surprise, because they had assumed that the couple would dive right in to launching a new charity venture.

Now, one royal expert is claiming that Harry and Meghan have decided to take some time away from the spotlight because they "need a break."

Their official departure from the royal family also comes as the world is in the thralls of a global coronavirus pandemic. In response to a temporary closing of the border between the U.S. and Canada, the couple decided to make the move to Los Angeles last month.

In speaking with the podcast "On Heir," royal expert Omid Scobie said that the buildup to the couple's exit ultimately led to a bit of an anti-climax when the couple actually departed from the royal family.

"It is interesting because we had such a build-up since January to the departure of Meghan and Harry stepping back as senior working royals," Scobie said.

"Suddenly on March 31 it sort of crept up on us really quickly, we had the couple announcing the beginning of their transition period over the next year on Instagram. At the same time, they were announcing that they are closing down their social media and their website and taking a break for the next few months. It's sort of taken everyone by surprise, I think."

Scobie said that while there was plenty of discussion in the press about what projects Harry and Meghan would take on next, what the couple really longed for was some time off.

"There was so much talk in the press about the couple preparing projects and ready to launch initiatives," Scobie said. "When actually it was two people that were like, 'We need a break too.'" CTV host Laney Lui said the move was a smart one as the world deals with the pandemic.

"I think that is, both on a personal and a professional level, a smart move," Lui said. "No one is moving forward with plans right now, and if you do have plans to move forward with it's not really a good look to be flaunting that in people's faces."

Before they left their Sussex Royal Instagram account behind, Harry and Meghan had posted several times about the threat of the virus and encouraged their followers to stay healthy both physically and mentally.
