Last year, before the Sussexes made their bombshell Instagram announcement that they would be stepping down as senior royals, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle took a six week break in Canada. They stayed at a borrowed mansion on Vancouver Island, hidden away from the prying eyes of the media and critics.
Fast forward a few roller coaster months for the couple, and they were reportedly flying by private jet to a mansion in Malibu, though nobody is sure of the exact location.
Charlie Lankston, a royal expert told ‘Express,’ that the couple chose Malibu because they didn’t want to be right in the center of L.A.
He said, “Sources have told us that Meghan and Harry are staying in a $20 million mansion in Malibu.”
He continued, “Now, this is interesting for a number of reasons. Malibu is nicely out of the way, it’s not right in the middle of LA, they’re not going to get that Hollywood, over the top lifestyle which I’m sure the two of them are not looking forward to getting involved into whatsoever.”
Well, the couple not wanting to get involved in the Hollywood lifestyle is still debatable.
There is also another sentimental reason why Harry and Meghan may want to live in Malibu, and it has to do with his mother.
Before Princess Diana died, she was dating Dodi al-Fayed who bought a house for the couple to live in just before their accident in 1997.
Lankston told the publication, “We know that Dodi had purchased property in the very same area and sources told us Princess Diana was very much planning to move in with him had their life not ended so tragically and so early,”
Another huge reason for Harry and Meghan wanting to live in Malibu is to be closer to her mother, Doria Ragland.
Despite the fact that Meghan is clearly not close to the rest of her family (and that would be putting it lightly) she does have a good relationship with her mother, and would want to live near her.
Lankston said, “Meghan’s family is from LA, her mother, who she is very close to, lives just outside the main Los Angeles City area.”
Apparently the opportunities in L.A. are much bigger for the couple than, say, Kansas or Kentucky. The lights and the glitz of Hollywood are too good to pass up. Despite their claims they want to start a charitable foundation or do some good in the world, they will most likely become celebrities with very important friends.
Will Meghan take up acting again? That’s always a possibility, but most likely she’s got bigger plans than returning to a small show like ‘Suits.’ She didn’t marry a Prince and then leave the royal family just to end up back where she started.
