Iman gets candid about grieving her late husband, David Bowie.
Her Grief
The retired supermodel, 66, went on "Today" and talked about the loved of her life who lost his life six years ago because of cancer. At the time of Bowie's passing, Iman was too preoccupied with helping her teenager cope up with the loss.
"I had a daughter who was a teenager when her father passed away, so I was really more concentrated in helping her go through her grief," she told host Hoda Kotb. "But I thought, oh yes, I did go through my grief, but I actually did not."
She explained that it was only during lockdown last year that she confronted the pain and grief of losing her husband.
"Last year I went to my house estate, this beautiful property that I haven’t spent time there since my husband passed away, and there I was stuck for the year and I was forced to deal with it," she said. "All of a sudden, grief knocked on the door and became a companion. And I went through all of it, and now it is the joy that I remember."
Not Walking The Aisle Again
During the chat, Iman also revealed that she was asked by her daughter, Lexi Jones, 21, whether she would ever get married again following Bowie's demise.
"No," Iman said. "People say to me when they talk, ‘Oh I loved your late husband,' and I said, ‘He’s not my late husband, he’s my husband,’ so that’s how I feel about it. This was truly the love of my life, and I just wait until I meet him again."
How It All Started
Iman met the English singer on a blind date set up by a mutual friend in Los Angeles.
“I moved to L.A., and while I was in L.A., I met David," she said on Naomi Campbell’s YouTube show "No Filter with Naomi."
She continued, "And it was a blind date, we were really set up. I met this hairdresser at a photographer’s dinner one night, and he said, ‘I’d like you to come to my birthday party.’ And it was at a restaurant, so I thought it was a birthday party. And it was four of us. David, the hairdresser, and the boyfriend, and me.”
Iman added, "The hairdresser was David’s hairdresser, but David didn’t even know. David was told also it was a birthday dinner. And that’s how I met him. And it was 29 years ago. It’s literally when people say do you believe in destiny? Yup. Yeah, this could not have happened… I truly in my heart feel it was predestined."
It's 'Destiny'
According to the catwalk queen, meeting Bowie was "love at first sight." She told People, "It took me a few months but I got there."
Meanwhile, in her recent interview, she said, "I think it was about destiny. Destiny really propelled me to go to L.A. for no obvious reason."
The couple tied the knot in Florence, Italy in June 1992. They lived in New York City where the singer was reported to "hide in plain sight" in his favorite book shops.
