Joe Exotic Speaks Out From Prison on 'Tiger King': 'I'm Done with the Carole Baskin Saga'

While the world has been on lockdown and undergoing self-quarantining measures amid the coronavirus pandemic, the Netflix docuseries, 'Tiger King', has gained something of a mythological status as one of the best to hit the streaming platform to date. It's main protagonist, or antagonist, depending on how you look at, Joseph Maldonado-Passage, or better known as Joe Exotic, has heard about the high praises and acclaims from the program. The former zoo owner is now speaking out from his prison cell, addressing his popularity and Carole Baskin.

Throughout the 'Tiger King' docuseries, there was a self-proclaimed war between himself and Baskin that effectively reached absurd heights. Ultimately, though, Maldonado-Passage went to prison due to allegations of 'hiring a hitman' to take out Baskin for $3,000, among several other charges.

According to Joe Exotic, he's done with the war on Baskin and wants to move on to a different tactical move: freeing himself from prison through exoneration. "I’m done with the Carole Baskin saga," he told Netflix on March 22. "It’s now time to turn the tables and Joe get out of jail a free man and exonerated from all these charges."

To get going in the process of freeing himself from prison, he has gone after several governmental agencies, as well as, his former business partner. According to Maldonado-Passage, they're seeking damages of approximately $94 million.

And of course, the eccentric Maldonado-Passage wants to get out of prison for one primary reason. He wants to bask in the fame that has come his way as a result of the Netflix docuseries.

"You know, it’d be nice if I could actually see me being famous out there, but I’ve seen these same four walls for a year and a half now," he said. "When I walk out of here, am I going to be as crazy as I was before," Maldonado-Passage added during the interview. "That will never change."

Maldonado-Passage's husband, Dillion Passage, shared with talk show host, Andy Cohen, that while his husband hasn't been able to watch the Netflix original, he's no doubt, heard about it and is 'ecstatic' about the attention it's getting. "It was a lot of good feedback, and he likes attention, obviously. He calls himself ‘Joe Exotic the Tiger King," Dillion revealed to Cohen.

Joe Exotic's husband would go on to reiterate that he's '100 percent' enjoying the newly found spotlight from the documentary. Later in the Netflix interview, Maldonado-Passage explained how much he appreciated his husband's love and support while he's been incarcerated.

"As short a time as I was married to Dillon, and still married to Dillon, you know 8 months before I got arrested for all this. It’s been a year and a half of sleeping in a car and going from couch to couch and house to house. I can’t thank my husband enough for standing beside me," he said.

Maldonado-Passage also made sure to reveal that he's changed his mindset on what he thinks about the deplorable zoo conditions, citing he's 'ashamed' of himself. Ultimately, it's something that he deeply regrets after having had time to reflect on the experience and where he's been.
