For the past two months, the world has been focused on social distancing and combating COVID-19, while Rebecca Crews, wife of Terry Crews was facing something far worse… cancer.

Crews, 54, was recently diagnosed with Stage 1 Breast Cancer only a few weeks ago. In that time, she’s already undergone a double mastectomy and reconstructive surgery.

Now cancer-free, the mother of five spoke candidly with People about her experience from the moment she discovered she had Stage 1 cancer to making the decision to undergo the surgery.

Rebecca and Terry Crews have been one of the famous couples who’ve been married for 29 years. Over the years, the two have been spotted on plenty of red carpets, along with appearing in their own reality tv show. It comes as no surprise her husband would be tremendously affected as well.

"My husband has watched me go through a lot, but the look on his face … he looked at me like I was going to die," Crews remembers. "He told me it felt like his insides were melting. I said, ‘I need you to be strong for me,' and he said, ‘Okay' and hugged me, but I think he needed that hug."

The 54-year-old stated that she’d always felt she would get cancer. Prior to her mother, Crews admits no one in her family has ever been diagnosed with the illness. Crews’ journey began about 12 years ago, when she had a small, pre-cancerous lump removed from her right breast.

A year ago, her mother underwent the same surgery. Every year after that, Crews insisted on having mammograms and ultrasounds. It was through an ultrasound Crews and her doctors discovered a small lump that later required a biopsy.

"I just thought to myself, 'Okay, if they find something, Rebecca, just cut it off and reconstruct it,'" she recalled thinking on the examination table. Weeks later, she got the call about her results.

Crews stated, “After the call, I had this clear vision of myself stepping through a door, and on the other side of this door, the sun was shining brightly and I was very happy," she said. "I just had this sense that I was going to be okay."

Immediately following the call, Crews’ stated her husband was the first person she confided in. The ’America’s Got Talent’ host rushed to his wife’s side, caring for her daily. Now with the statewide stay at home order, the couple is home in Pasadena, where they are social distancing amid the coronavirus epidemic.

"I have to give him his props because he's been cooking for me, helping me bathe, and just really stepping up," Crews jokes.

As she heals, the cancer survivor shares she’s been "doing a little soul searching" and thinking about what she's going to do now that she has a healthy and "exciting" life ahead of her.
