In case you missed it, legendary singer Bill Withers, who wrote iconic songs such as ‘Lean on Me’ and ‘Lovely Day’ passed away recently at the age of 81. While many celebs have been sending out their condolences on social media, including Chance The Rapper and Lenny Kravitz, another famous face sent out her own message via Twitter—Ivanka Trump. Trump took to Twitter to memorialize the music legend, but her tweet received a ton of backlash from the Twitter world.
Trump shared a video of Withers singing his hit song ‘Lean On Me’ and captioned the video saying, “Bill Withers, one of the absolute all-time greats has passed. There is no more appropriate time to reflect on his words than now as we lean on each other.” Immediately after Trump sent the tweet out into the Twitter world, users began responding and not in a nice way. Many users have been critical of Trump’s tweet about Withers and replied with some unkind words.
One Twitter used wrote, “There will be plenty of sunshine when you dad is ‘gone’ from office in November,” which is in reference to another hit song from Withers, “Ain’t No Sunshine.” Another user replied back to Trump saying, “Like she sits home and grooves to Bill W. No way Ivanka wrote this tribute.” Another Twitter user sounded off saying, “Does she think we don’t know she has no clue who he is? Way to try and change the subject away from her uppity husband’s disastrous performance yesterday.”
Some followers cracked jokes referencing COVID-19, replying to the tweet saying, “Can you lean 6ft apart from the rest of us?” Another user tweeted out angrily, “I don’t want to hear from anyone connected to Trump on the passing of any of these music legends we are losing due to COVID-19!” Another person replied saying, “And no… we are not leaning on each other. We are social distancing.. #TogetherApart.” It seemed that Trump’s tweet sparked quite the outrage for what was seemingly a memorial to a great music legend.
This isn’t the first time Trump found herself in some hot water after sending out a tweet. Just recently, Trump was criticized publicly by supermodel Chrissy Teigen for Trump’s coronavirus stay-at-home-tweet. Trump tweeted out a suggestion to her followers, saying, “Staying home today w/ kids? Plan living room camp out! Throw a bedsheet over some taped together brooms. Plan a menu & ‘pack’ sandwiches, salads (S’mores optional?) A fun activity that also brings family together for a meal!” Teigen clapped back loudly in response saying, “after we quote pack unquote sandwiches can we please have Covid tests.”
