In 2008, "The Dark Knight" was released, and it took the film industry and the world by surprise. In the years since its release, the film by Christopher Nolan became known as one of the best superhero movies ever released. It was the first of a very impressive trilogy that swept awards and topped film charts worldwide.
The film reinvented the public image of Batman (played by Christian Bale) as a superhero, and the fans loved it. Bale acted as Batman and received many praises from audiences, film critics, fans of the character, and many others.
However, he later revealed that he didn't feel the same way as all these people did, especially with what he considered a much more impressive performance by Heath Ledger, who played Batman's arch-nemesis, Joker.
Keep reading to find out what Bale had to say about how his performance fell short in comparison to Ledger's
Ledger's Performance Was Amazing
"The Dark Knight" delved into the story of Bruce Wayne, aka Batman, as he faced off against crime lords, supervillains, and his arch-nemesis, Joker, played by Heath Ledger. The major thing that endeared the movie to audiences was the amazing performances by the actors, especially Ledger.
Ledger was not the first man to play the Joker character, but his execution was so good that it completely changed the idea of Joker as a supervillain.
Every scene Ledger was in; he stole the show; he was immaculate and effortlessly evoked fear amongst the film's audiences. He was also able to completely express Joker as the embodiment of evil and disregard for human life.

Ledger famously used method acting techniques to completely understand the chaos, obsession, and anarchy that his character represented in the movie. Although these methods, such as locking himself up for days, were considered extreme, they seemed to have been effective. He also took inspiration and techniques from the previous Joker performances, "The Brothers Grimm," the book "A Clockwork Orange" by Anthony Burgess, and several other sources.
Despite the initial controversy and negative press about his casting as Batman's arch-nemesis, Ledger quickly shut down critics after the movie was released and will forever be remembered as one of the greatest actors to take on the role.
Bale Felt His Performance Was Lackluster In Comparison
With how amazing Ledger was in the film, it was difficult for the other actors to shine despite how well they performed their roles. Bale was one of such actors, as his astounding performance as Batman still failed to outshine the excellence of Ledger as Joker. And he knew it.
In an interview with Yahoo!, he shared that he wasn't satisfied and pleased with his performance as the superhero and felt that he could have been better. He said, "I didn't quite manage what I hoped I would," and explained that he had a higher standard of what he wanted to be as Batman.
He also pointed out that Ledger was a factor in why he felt like he didn't do so well. He said, "Heath turned up, and just kind of completely ruined all my plans." Bale explained that he found Ledger's performance as the Joker superior to Batman and that this realization shook his confidence.
The Actors Earned Oscars, But For Different Movies
Perhaps another factor that might have contributed to Bale's shaken confidence was the outcome of the awards season that year.
As amazing as his performance as Batman was, he failed to win an award for his role and instead won an Academy Award for the Best Supporting Actor in the film "The Fighter," in which he played the boxer Dicky Eklund. He was also nominated for the Best Actor Award for two other movies.
On the other hand, Ledger was posthumously recognized for his excellent performance as the Joker at the Academy Awards. He was nominated for and won the award of Best Supporting Actor.
This win was a huge moment in history because no other actor had ever won such a big award for playing a comic book character and because Ledger was one of the youngest actors to win the award.
Bale Turned Down The Opportunity To Play Batman Again
Bale played the role of Batman in the first movie in the trilogy "Batman Begins," which was released in 2005, and in the third film "The Dark Knight Rises," which was released in 2012. All three films were extremely successful and topped box office charts worldwide.
Many film lovers, fans of superhero films, and critics noted that Bale was the best actor to ever portray the legendary superhero.
So, when Nolan started casting for a new film in 2013 that would feature Batman again, many assumed that the actor would take the role. Studio executives at Warner Bros wanted him to play Batman again, and reports stated that they heavily courted him and put a lot of pressure on him to sign the deal.
Sadly, despite the pressure from the studio and fans alike, Bale turned down the opportunity, along with a fat paycheck of an estimated $50 million that came with it. A report by Entertainment Weekly cited that when he was asked about the reasons for his refusal, he declined to share and simply stated that he was looking forward to what another actor would come up with.
