Ellen DeGeneres has been using her time under quarantine due to the coronavirus calling friends who are also in isolation and posting videos of those calls on Instagram. During one call - to John Legend and Chrissy Teigen, parents to daughter Luna and son Miles - she joked that she wished she and wife Portia de Rossi had had children, because the two are getting bored during their lockdown. In reality, however, the two have always been very vocal about not wanting to have children.

In an interview with Out magazine in 2013, de Rossi said, "There comes some pressure in your mid-30s, and you think, 'Am I going to have kids so I don’t miss out on something that other people really seem to love?' Or is it that I really genuinely want to do this with my whole heart? I didn't feel that my response was 'yes' to the latter. You have to really want to have kids, and neither of us did. So it’'s just going to be me and Ellen and no babies — but we're the best of friends and married life is blissful, it really is. I've never been happier than I am right now."

DeGeneres was lounging on her couch during her telephone call to Legend and Teigen on March 18. "You have kids. I wish I had kids right now. I'm so bored," DeGeneres said. Both Legend and Teigen responded the same, adding that they, too, were bored. But DeGeneres was only joking. In a 2018 episode of "Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee," she told Jerry Seinfeld, "I thought I would adopt. I never thought I would have a baby, but I thought I'd want kids." As it turned out, she and de Rossi have chosen fur babies, instead.

Before adopting Mrs. Wallace Browning, Ellen DeGeneres and Portia de Rossi had rescue dogs Augie, Kid and Wolf.

DeGeneres and de Rossi have several pets, including three cats and four dogs. All of them are rescues. As of September of 2019, their family included cats Charlie, George and Chairman, and dogs Wolf, a Maltese-Poodle mix, Augie, a Jack Russell mix, mixed-breed Kid and Mrs. Wallis Browning, a standard poodle. "I can't imagine life without them," DeGeneres told People magazine in a 2019 interview. "I come home and no matter how tired I am it feels good to get that unconditional love."

"I’ve always loved animals since I can remember and always thought someday I would work with them in some way," DeGeneres said in the People interview. "When you're a kid you don't always know the different occupations. I thought I was going to be a veterinarian. Then I realized what that entailed and that broke my heart. Then I worked with a rescue organization but I really thought my life would somehow revolve around animals … I hope one day I can start my own foundation and I support lots of rescue organizations now. I just love animals."
