In a short span of fewer than three years, Lil Nas X has risen to become a hip-hop icon, who has successfully shattered every stereotype of what it means to be a black rapper.
However, despite his immense success, Nas X hasn’t achieved the goals he set for himself, especially with his debut album, “Montero.”
“Montero” was released in September after Nas X had watered fans’ appetites with No.1 chart hits like “Industry Baby” featuring Jack Harlow and “Montero (Call Me By Your Name).”
And while the project was well-received by fans thanks to Nas X’s impressive artistry and controversial marketing gimmicks, it didn’t get to peak at No. 1.
Lil Nas X On’ Montero’ Not Going No. 1
Nas X’s debut album got the next best thing and became the No. 2 album in the country, but that wasn’t good enough for the Georgia native.
In a recent sit-down with Jeremy O. Harris of GQ Magazine after being named GQ’s Musician of the Year, Nas X opened up about “Montero” not making it to the dream chart position.
The “Sun Goes Down” singer, while discussing the prevalence of influencer celebrity culture, revealed that he felt reduced to an “influencer” when the album didn’t go No. 1. In his words:
“I did feel like that. Then I got out of it, and all I thought about was how blessed I am. About where I was three years ago. Nobody even thought that I would be here.”
Nas X recalled that everyone believed he would be a one-hit-wonder with the release of “Old Town Road,” but years down the line, his album competed with Drake’s.
Relishing the fact that “Montero” and Drake’s “Certified Lover Boy” went head-to-head, Nas X gushed,
“Drake, with this huge album and the most first-week sales of the year. Plus, Drake’s my idol. There are too many other wins to be upset.”

The ‘Holiday’ Singer Was Rejected By Drake & Nicki Minaj
Despite finding an idol in the “Hotline Bling” rapper, Nas X confessed that he was rejected by Drake and fellow former Young Money colleague, Nicki Minaj.
The 22-year-old shared that he asked Drake and Nicki to collaborate on “Montero,” but it didn’t work out. He explained that he wanted Nicki on “Industry Baby” but wasn’t sure how she “would have felt with that video or whatnot.”
As for Drake, Nas X wanted to collaborate with him on “Dolla Sign Slime” alongside Megan Thee Stallion. While he didn’t go into details about why things didn’t work out with Drake, he affirmed there was no bad blood.
His DMs Are Out Of Order
Nas X also touched on his infamous dating life in the lengthy interview. When asked by Harris what it meant to be a respected gay icon with so much influence, the young artist admitted it came with some perks, and a lot of chaos.

“My DMs are all out of order,” he confessed. However, Nas X doesn’t see that as an entirely horrible thing, as he has enjoyed a few hookups in the process.
According to him, “I do get h—y, and I’m like, “Let’s see who’s the hottest person in this thing. But you know, luckily I don’t really do that. I only did that once.”
The two-time Grammy Award winner also stated that he never hooks up via Grindr, as it would probably get him “murdered.”
