In spite of the fact that he faced impeachment hearings just months ago, President Trump's approval ratings have hovered in the 40s for the entire year. He actually hit an approval rating of 49% in late January and early February, which was around the time of his acquittal in the Senate impeachment trial.

His approval rating steadily dropped in late February and into March, bottoming out at 44% last week. But as the pandemic worsened and Trump's response ramped up, his approval ratings soared back to the highest of his Presidency.

Split Along Party Lines

The numbers behind Trump's approval rating predictably split along party lines. Over 90% of Republicans, 13% of Democrats, and 43% of Independents approve of Trump's job performance.

The really interesting thing about the latest poll results is the way that Trump's approval rating has changed with Democrats and Independents. In the first half of March, only 7% of Democrats approved of Trump's job performance. That increased by 6% in the second half of the month. His numbers with Independents rose 8% in the latter half of the month.

Though Trump's response to the coronavirus has been widely criticized by politicians and the media, it seems that the public isn't as disappointed. In fact, 49% of Americans said they approve of the way Trump has been handling the coronavirus pandemic, while 44% disapprove.

Again, the numbers were split on party lines. 83% of Republicans approved of Trump's response while 71% of Democrats disapproved of Trump's response. Independents were evenly split with 43% approving and 43% disapproving. Separate polls found very similar numbers.

Why Are His Numbers So High?

The Trump administration's response to the coronavirus pandemic has been bumpy at best. The administration was slow to take the pandemic seriously. Trump has spread a plethora of misinformation in his daily coronavirus briefings.

So, why are his approval ratings to high? And why does nearly half the country think he's doing a great job?

One possible explanation is that the public typically rallies around the President in times of crisis. Regardless of how the President is handling the crisis, their approval rating goes up because of the crisis.

Another explanation is that people haven't been paying close attention to how the coronavirus response has been handled and are paying more attention now that Trump's administration is taking the crisis more seriously.

Regardless of the reasons, Trump is enjoying the highest approval rating of his Presidency for the third time in 2020.
