COVID-19 -- also known as the Coronavirus -- has taken up much of our online conversation these past few weeks. People have been sharing their coping mechanisms, tips on proper hand-washing ... and conspiracy theories. Lots and lots of conspiracy theories.

Many celebrities have had a less than ideal response to the global pandemic, which has led to backlash more often than not. Evangeline Lilly experienced her own Coronavirus outrage when she upset her Instagram followers with a rather offensive caption.

Lilly angered her social media followers when she posted an image of a teacup on her Instagram feed. That should have seemed like a straightforward cozy morning Instagram photo, but the caption was anything but.

In the caption, Lilly claimed that she had dropped off her children for gymnastics that morning. She said they had washed their hands before going inside, and that they were happily laughing and playing. The Ant-Man And The Wasp star left a hashtag implying life was continuing as usual for her family.

Lilly's comments prompted some to ask her why she was not self-isolating with her family. The Lost star said that some people valued their freedom over their lives.

She continued airing her thoughts on the COVID-19 pandemic. Lilly implied that she believes the virus is just a hoax. She pointed out that this is an election year and said there was always some sort of issue taking place during these political periods. Many thought this was an alarming viewpoint and were upset by her refusal to quarantine herself and her family.

An Apology

Lilly is now issuing an apology for her previous behavior. She posted a photo of her family playing Monopoly on Instagram and wrote a long note in the caption addressing the COVID-19 pandemic.

In her caption, Lilly said her "silence" had been "cryptic" and promised -- in all caps -- that she and her family were staying home. Lilly said that directions from the government had changed drastically in just a couple of days and insisted that she had not intended to upset anyone with her previous post.

Celebrity Faux Pas

Lilly is not the only celebrity who has upset their fans with their reactions to the virus and the ensuing pandemic. Kylie Jenner sparked concern for her wellbeing after posing for an Instagram photo with her finger in her mouth. The CDC has recommended people not touch their faces at this time.

Prince William made jokes about people's fears over the virus. He indicated that they might be worried over normal coughs. While Kelly Ripa compared grocery shortages and the COVID-19 pandemic to missing botox appointments.
