This role shouldn't come as much of a surprise to those who are familiar with Porter and the activist roles he takes up in his personal life. Being a self-proclaimed gender-noncomforming homosexual, Porter has allied himself with the LGBTQ+ community and become an outspoken voice in reform, equality, and representation talks in recent years.

Porter has also been an advocate for genderless dressing for quite some time, bending the "rules" of fashion to meld womens and men's garments together into his own unique style.

"If you’re a woman wearing pants, you’re inside of the standard, and that’s cool. But if a man decides to put on female clothes, it’s disgusting. So what are we saying? Once again, male is better and female is disgusting… My masculinity is in question because masculinity is better? F*** that, it ain’t," Porter said candidly in an interview with Esquire.

With this in mind, Porter is attempting to bring the gender-nonconformity to the role of the Fairy Godmother in 'Cinderella.'

While speaking to CBS, Porter explained his thoughts behind reworking such a classic character for the new iteration of the 'Cinderella' story.

"This is a classic, this is a classic fairytale for a new generation,”the actor commented, adding, "I think that the new generation is really ready. The kids are ready. It’s the grownups that are slowing stuff down."

He then went on to explain that his overall goal with 'Cinderella' was to provide a reflection of how he feels society is today.

"I think it’s really special and important when we revisit these classic stories and fairy tales and things of that nature that they reflect where the culture is today, where the world is today… This version of it is very much about the empowerment of women and the idea that women don’t need a man to validate their existence on the planet," Porter concluded his explanation. The movie was initially set to be released in February of 2021, but with global health concerns that date may be pushed back.
