Laura Prepon's Tell-All Book Reveals Who Taught Her About Bulimia

Many may recognized Laura Prepon as the actress who played Donna on That 70's Show or more recently as Alex from Orange is the New Black on Netflix. The television star has recently wrote a tell-all book were she opens up about personal details of her life. The book has yet to be released but fans have been given a glimpse of certain topics that will be covered in her book. The book is titled "You & I, as Mothers".

Her Health

The 40 year old actress provides as an excerpt from her book to People magazine that gives us a glimpse of what to expect in her book. Prepon reveals that she struggled with an eating disorder that she developed when she was only 15 years old. She stated that the disorder remained a part of her life until she had entered her twenties. Roughly 5 years being subjected to this disorder. The actress states that she learned about bulimia through her mother.

Her Teen Years

In the excerpt Laura recalls being 5'10, going to a modeling agency when she was 15 years old and was told to lose 25 lbs. After she was given that advice by the modeling company the actress says that her mother began weighing and taking her measurements every morning. It seems that her mother felt her daughter would be a great model and all she had to do was help her lose the weight. Eventually Laura had dropped her weight down to 105 lbs.

An Unspoken Secret

Once she had made it to 105 lbs that is when Laura said that her mother introduced her to bulimia. Her mother told her that "You can have your cake and eat it too." and the aspiring model knew exactly what she had meant by that phrase. The actress states that it was something that would do together describing it as a "bonding thing" and secret that they kept among each other. It is something pretty unimaginable for a teenage girl to be experiencing with their mother.

Understanding Her Mother

It took Laura to begin writing to understand her mother's motive during this time and why she encouraged her daughter to engage in bulimia. The actress states that her mother had been dealing with bulimia since she was in college. After her mother had lost weight she began dating Laura's father. Prepon interpretation of her mother was that to her mom being thin would bring success. So as difficult as it may sound Laura's mother felt that this would help her daughter in the modeling industry. The actress further notes that her mother suffers from Alzheimer’s and her health is not improving so Prepon does not want to spend time being angry with her mother. Prepon hopes that to "open the conversation" regarding bulimia and allow others going through the same disorder to know that they are not alone.
