John Mayer, who is known for his wit and sense of humor, recently trolled a ton of celebrities who added their voices to a new rendition of the song “Imagine” by John Lennon. The song, which features a mirage of celebrities singing their own portion of the song, has been edited together to feature quite a few famous faces. In fact, 25 celebrities in total were featured on the song, starting with Gal Gadot and then venturing off into Sarah Silverman, Will Ferrell, Natalie Portman, and many more. But the video received a ton of flack from fans and the media, and eventually became hilariously spoofed by singer John Mayer.

The “Imagine” video caused quite the stir over the past week. While some thought it was nice for celebrities to come together in a time of crisis, others found it to be completely tone-deaf to the circumstances. Wonder Woman star Gal Gadot began the video with a message about being on day 6 in quarantine, and how the past few days had her feeling a bit “philosophical” and how everyone around the globe is likely to experience the same things together. Cue the segue to singing “Imagine” by John Lennon.

The video has since been mocked throughout the media with the New York Times titling their article, “This ‘Imagine’ Cover Is No Heaven” and Slate launching their own article titled, “A Video of Celebrities Singing 'Imagine' So Bad It Can Bring Us All Together in Hatred.” Well, perhaps the most hilariously thing to come out of this whole debacle is the response it garnered from singer John Mayer. Mayer decided to take a lighthearted jab at the video by taking to Instagram with a new episode of his “Current Mood” series.

Mayer begins by saying, “Hey everyone, John here with a Current Mood Mini. So, this week, Gal Gadot and a bevy of other celebrities released a rendition of John Lennon’s ‘Imagine.’ It went far and wide across the internet. I have to come clean about something,” the singer jokingly went on. “They actually asked me to be a part of it, and I totally misunderstood the assignment, and thought they wanted me to sing ‘Imagine‘ by Ariana Grande, from her 2019 smash hit album, 'Thank U, Next.' They were nice enough to send over a cut. Take a look.”

The video cuts to Gal Gadot’s version, where her, Kristin Wiig, and Jamie Dornan all begin with their lines, but then cuts to John Mayer abruptly, who is singing Grande’s song, hilariously out-of-place. The video then goes on with other celebrities, before cutting back to Mayer who continues on with Ariana Grande lyrics. At the end of the video, Mayer simply shrugs to the camera, but it easily was one of the best things to come from this mash-up video.
