Ahh, love will make us do crazy things, right? Just ask soccer star Luka Jovic who plays for Real Madrid. The footballer recently flew from Spain back to his country of Serbia in order to reunite with his pregnant model girlfriend, Sofija Milosevic. While some might consider this gesture highly romantic, others, like government officials, find it highly problematic. Jovic’s entire soccer club was advised to remain in Spain on a two-week isolation quarantine after a Real Madrid basketball player tested positive for coronavirus.

However, despite Jovic ignoring the quarantine and lockdown advice, ESPN is reporting that the soccer player was in fact permitted by the medical department of Real Madrid to be able to return home. This decision was made in part to help improve Jovic’s low morale. Yet, the permission was solely granted on the terms that Jovic would immediately self-isolate when he arrived in Serbia. Reports have said that Jovic ignored those terms and was seen out in Belgrade celebrating his girlfriend’s birthday.

While it was said that Jovic was warned about facing backlash for traveling home, he likely didn’t expect it to be from top Serbian government officials. Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic threatened Jovic and another one of his teammates by saying, “If either of them leaves [isolation] they will be arrested. I think the two of them regret what they have done, but I’ll make it clear to them that people’s lives are much more important than their millions. Despite all that, we’re not going to crucify anyone.”

Prime Minister Ana Brnabic also added her own two-cents to the situation by saying, “We have negative examples of football stars who earn millions abroad and when they come back to Serbia, they don’t self-isolate as is obligatory.” Meanwhile, Jovic’s girlfriend ended up posting to her Instagram in support of her boyfriend’s decision to fly home. Milosevic wrote, “Im [sic] so thankful that Luka can be next to me during this period. @lukajovic, I couldn’t imagine being without him during this difficult time for the whole world.”

So, what say the soccer star of his decision to leave the country? Jovic is rather unapologetic about the decision, despite his girlfriend being a potential high-risk of infection because of her pregnancy. Jovic explained on his IG Story, “While in Spain, I tested negative for coronavirus, and I decided to travel to Serbia to help and support our people and be close to my family, in agreement with my club. When I landed in Serbia, I again tested negative for coronavirus. I am very sorry that some people did their job unprofessionally and did not give me the correct instructions on how to behave in self-isolation. … In Spain, I was allowed to go to a pharmacy and a supermarket so I could get the groceries I needed, which is not the case here. I apologise to everyone if I have endangered them in some way and I hope that together we can manage to overcome all this.”
