Last week, Evangeline Lilly, whom you may know from the TV series Lost and, more recently, the Antman movies, made some out of touch comments about the COVID-19 pandemic. She theorized that it was a conspiracy, and, perhaps even worse, declared that she would not be self-quarantining, potentially putting herself, her family, and others at risk. Her comments were pretty much universally condemned, leading many to wonder whether her reduced role in the upcoming Antman film had anything to do with the controversy.

The uproar began after Lilly posted a photo of a cup to tea to her Instagram page with the following caption: "#morningtea Just dropped my kids off at gymnastics camp. They all washed their hands before going in. They are playing and laughing. #businessasusual". The vast majority of comments were disapproving. One user (@passengershaming) commented, "Oh wait, she is serious? Yikes." Lesley Ann Brandt's comment, "So incredibly selfish and irresponsible," has received over 9,000 likes in solidarity. Commenter after commenter expressed disappointment at Lilly's irresponsibility and selfishness.

As if the original Instagram post weren't enough, Lilly expanded upon her odd views in the comments. "Let’s be vigilant right now," she wrote, "keeping a close eye on our leaders, making sure they don’t abuse this moment to steal away more freedoms and grab more power but gracious with each other as we try to navigate the unknown dangers of a modern, global world and power structure." This peculiar comment was made even more strange when Lilly compared the current situation to "marshall law" and even admitted that she and her father (who she lives with) are "immune compromised".

People Were Not Having It

After her inflammatory comments, it looked like everyone was now anti-Evangeline Lilly. People took to social media to express their disappointment. One former fan even wrote, "I love Evangeline Lilly and I’ve always dismissed her problematic ways but the fact that’s she’s refusing to quarantine bc she thinks covid19 is a political hoax is driving me up the wall...." Celebrities got in on it, too. Sophie Turner and her husband Joe Jonas made an Instagram story in which Turner seemed to subtly call Lily out, saying "Stay inside, don't be f--ing stupid.... I don't give a f--- about your freedom."

According to We Got This Covered, a source has revealed that, after her comments, Lilly was dropped as a lead in the upcoming Antman film. Originally, her character Hope van Dyne (aka Wasp) was meant to join forces with Ant Man, played by Paul Rudd. However, the film will now be focusing more on Ant Man's relationship with his daughter Cassie Lang, also known as Stature (Emma Fuhrmann). As of yet, Marvel has made no official comments on the change, so we don't know the real reasoning behind it. Hopefully, though, Lily will get the message and be safer in the future.
