During his daily coronavirus press briefing on Monday, President Donald Trump talked about how long it may be before businesses can open up and people can start relaxing their practices of social distancing.

Despite warnings from experts, who say the country may need to maintain some form of lockdown for months to slow the spread of the virus, Trump said that he would like the country to be open and functioning like normal within weeks.

On Tuesday, during an appearance at a virtual Town Hall held by Fox News, Trump said he wanted the "country opened up, and just raring to go, by Easter."

At his briefing on Monday Trump insisted, “We’re going to be opening our country up for business because our country was meant to be open and working with others.” He continued by saying, ."..at a certain point we have to get open and we have to get moving. We don't want to lose these companies. We don't want to lose these workers.”

When asked about his timeline for opening up the country, Trump replied, "I'm not looking at months, I can tell you right now."

Defying Experts

Unfortunately, Trump's proposed timeline for opening businesses and relaxing suggestions about social distancing is not in line with what experts are saying. Leading experts in the spread of disease and the top doctors all over the country have made it clear several times that extreme measures must be taken and maintained in order to slow the pandemic.

In order to prevent a huge amount of deaths, some form of social distancing needs to be practiced until a vaccine is developed. Experts say this could take a year or 18 months.

So, is the country stuck in this stay at home, work from home, nothing's open, isolated world for eighteen months? Not necessarily. But to slow the spread of the pandemic enough to go back to normal life, the U.S. would need to take even more extreme measures than some places are right now.

To truly manage this pandemic, everyone except completely essential workers would need to go home and stay home for fourteen days straight. No spring breakers going to the beach. No small hangouts with a few friends. No travel between states. Just go home and stay home. Go outside to get some fresh air. But other than that, go nowhere.

The country would need to completely lockdown like Itlay, France, and China have. And that goes completely against American nature.

If President Trump decides to relax recommendations on social distancing and businesses closing, the number of cases of coronavirus will spike again and continue to rise. And if cases continue to rise, many more people will die.

Experts have made it clear that isolating people who are already symptomatic won't do any good because the virus is transmitted long before people are symptomatic. So, if businesses open and people stop social distancing, the coronavirus will continue to spread exponentially.

The only way that the country could open within weeks, as Trump suggests, would be if a nationwide lockdown were imposed and enforced.
