Former first lady Michelle Obama reached out to her followers, offering them some tips to fend off the stresses that come along with a global viral pandemic.

“These past few weeks have been scary and difficult for many of us,” Obama said via Instagram. “We just don’t have a roadmap for what we’re currently experiencing—that in and of itself can bring up feelings of anxiety, loneliness, and fear. Not to mention the worry we feel about the health and safety of our parents, children, and loved ones and the financial security of so many families.

The former White House residents, like everyone, are facing the possibility of being exposed to a potentially deadly virus and the halt of normal social interactions as a way of stemming the spread.

The former first lady also encouraged those practicing social distancing to do so in a way that still keeps them emotionally connected:

“I also know staying close to my community helps me to feel connected and strong. If you’re not sure what that looks like these days, I’ve offered a few suggestions to get you started. But this is by no means an exhaustive list!” Obama said.

The mother of two encouraged her followers to begin their interaction by adding their best tips on her post and to go on supporting others during this difficult time.

“Add your comment below with the ways you’re showing up for your community during these tough times,” Obama said. And don’t forget: It’s okay to take a breath, too. Be gentle with yourself. Log off when you need to, take a break if you can, and let others know when you’d like a little help.

In an earlier post, Obama acknowledged the frustrations many Americans are dealing with in the face of the COVID-19 outbreak.

“These past few weeks have been a scary and difficult time,” Obama said previously on Instagram. “While so much is still unknown, one thing has been made startlingly clear: just how interconnected our communities are, whether they are the size of a city block or the span of the entire planet.
