Days after being called "one of the meanest people alive," the comedian and talk show host Ellen DeGeneres posted an Instagram video that many people believe is subtly addressing this claim. While the two events are probably unrelated, some fans are convinced that DeGeneres, whose motto is "be kind to one another," is making a statement in this video, which she made while quarantined at home. So, was Ellen clapping back at the haters, or was she just having a little fun?

What is the Drama About?

Ellen posted her video on Sunday, just two days after a popular Twitter thread calling her "one of the meanest people ever". There have been many rumors over the years about Ellen's diva personality, but this is one of the most overt. Here's the story: Comedian Kevin T. Porter tweeted out that "Right now we all need a little kindness. You know, like Ellen Degeneres always talks about! She’s also notoriously one of the meanest people alive...Respond to this with the most insane stories you’ve heard about Ellen being mean & I’ll match every one w/ $2 to @LAFoodBank"

Did Some Good Come of This?

Although this was kind of a mean-spirited way of spreading kindness, Porter has raised at least $600 for the Los Angeles Food Bank, so maybe it's not all bad? Anyway, many actually did reply with stories of DeGeneres being mean to them and people they know. On the flip side, some were commenting against the thread, calling it unproductive at a time when many of us are truly struggling and just want to spread positivity. As @twit_psb said, "As much as I like gossip this thread is ridiculous. Please don't encourage slander even for a good cause."

On Sunday, DeGeneres posted a video of her playing with Legos at home. Her caption read, "Don’t count me out yet, LEGO." The video showed DeGeneres wearing a t-shirt that read "Staff, while telling the camera, "Alright you guys, it's comin' along. I'm doin' it." She then showed us her progress on a Lego construction set. While the video was probably just a playful look into how DeGeneres is spending her quarantine, some gave it a darker interpretation. "She looks so sad," commented one fan.

The Comments Showed Another Side of Her "Fan" Base

While this video does not seem to have anything to do with Porter's tweets, many commenters took the time to post rude comments as well, highlighting how Porter is not her only detractor. "Must be super hard to fill all the time in quarantine with your billion dollar mansion and unlimited options," one commenter wrote. Another person commented "Ellen please put a lil make- up on!!" Ellen definitely has both fans and detractors, but let's all at least try to believe that we are all doing the best we can right now.
