Amazon is Making Some Kids Programming Free. Here's What to Watch

Many of us around the world are being forced to stay home for an indefinite period of time, and of any age group, this might be hardest on kids, who are used to going outside to play, or at the very least, to wait for the school bus each morning. In order to keep them entertained during quarantined, as well as cultivate a better relationship with their parents, who might be considering a Prime subscription, Amazon Prime Video has made much of their children's programming available to everyone with an account, not just Prime customers. Here are some of the best shows your kid could be watching.

Select seasons of the classic PBS animated series Arthur will be available for free. Considered one of the best kids' shows of all time, Arthur is based on the picture book series of the same title by author Marc Brown. The titular character is a third-grade aardvark, who deals with his strict teacher Mr. Ratburn and his annoying younger sister DW, and bikes around Elwood City with his friends Buster, Francine, the Brain, Muffy, and many others. Each character has distinct talents and interests, making this a perfect choice for curious, smart kids.

'Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood'

If Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood sounds familiar, that's because it is based on the classic show, Mister Roger's Neighborhood. You may remember Daniel Striped Tiger from the original--Daniel Tiger is his four-year-old son, and they reside in the Neighborhood of Make Believe. Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood features characters from Mister Roger's Neighborhood such as Katerina Kittycat, Prince Wednesday, and O the Owl. As the PBS website explains, "Through imagination, creativity and music, Daniel and his friends learn the key social skills necessary for school and for life."

'Just Add Magic'

Just Add Magic is an Amazon Prime original, and perfect for kids who may have outgrown Daniel Tiger's Neighborhood and Arthur. Amazon describes the premise thus: "When Kelly and her two best friends stumble upon a mysterious cookbook, they discover the book's recipes are far from ordinary-- they're magical. Attempting to use the recipes to release Kelly's grandmother from a powerful curse, they uncover more clues surrounding Grandma's mystery and learn each recipe comes with a hefty price." Just Add Magic is a fantastical exploration of young female friendship and the power of family.

'Peppa Pig'

In Europe, kids can watch the wildly popular animated series Peppa Pig. This show, which has been running for over 15 years, follows Peppa Pig, her little brother George Pig, their parents, and the other animal families that live in their town. Peppa's friend include Rebecca Rabbit, Suzy Sheep, and Candy Cat. Peppa Pig's storylines help kids understand and work through new emotions, all while showing Peppa deal with situations that they might be exposed to as well. In the US, episodes of Peppa Pig are available for purchase on YouTube and Vudu.
