The 27-year-old singer said she was overwhelmed by the negative response she received after gracing the stage in latex underwear, as thousands of memes later surfaced of trolls comparing Miley’s body to a “turkey.”
And while Miley’s newfound image at the time oozed plenty of confidence, she struggled to deal with the fact that people had ridiculed her figure, consequently leading her to form dark thoughts about her appearance.
On the second episode of her Instagram live talk show, “Bright Minded: Live With Miley,” on Mar. 17, the “Adore You” hitmaker gushed about the struggles she faced after performing alongside Robin Thicke at the VMAs and ultimately feeling terrible about herself once the negative comments started pouring in.
She shared: “I basically went through two or three years where I wouldn’t wear shorts. I stopped wearing skirts on stage, all this s**t, because after the VMAs and I had on my cute new bodysuit, everyone started comparing me to a turkey.”
The “Fly On The Wall” chart-topper continued: “I was like just so skinny and so pasty and they kept putting me next to this turkey, and I was feeling so bad about myself that I did not wear a bikini for like two years.”
To make matters worse, Miley said that her VMAs performance stripped her from having any sort of self-confidence after all was said and done, explaining that the cruel jibes carried on for weeks, and it “really affected her personal life.”
That very same year, Miley would call it quits with Aussie actor Liam Hemsworth.
She explained: “No one thought that that would’ve ever made me feel some type of way. It was just really really hurtful to be so body-shamed like that. And it really affected me in my personal life.”
The Tennessee-born superstar also talked about the inner battle that ensued after giving one of the most controversial MTV performances in history, stressing that fans would have branded her as a “fraud” if she admitted to the fact that she wasn’t as confident as she made herself out to be.
So, while Miley was sticking out her tongue and gave off a carefree and unapologetic attitude, she was dealing with self-esteem issues and couldn’t stand the thought of showing any skin for several years to come.
“What was so hard about it was my brand has always been about being so unapologetically myself and being confident, and the worst thing that I would feel like I would be to my fans would be lying or a fraud.”
“I felt like having this persona of being the most confident girl on the planet was actually kind of fraud because I was so insecure on the inside that in my personal life I wasn’t even wearing bathing suits and shorts.”
