While Taylor Swift and Kanye West have an ongoing conflict that is a marvel to all, and for very good reason, it is not a stretch to say that their drama has reached bigger heights than the Eastcoast-Westcoast rivalry of the 1990s’.

If you don’t recall, their beef began at the 2009 MTV VMAs, when Taylor's "You Belong with Me" beat out Lady Gaga's "Poker Face", Katy Perry's "Hot n Cold", Beyoncé's "Single Ladies (Put a Ring on It)", Pink's "So What, and Kelly Clarkson's "My Life Would Suck Without You".

While Taylor’s win over the other five female pop stars was appalling, as she was the sweet and innocent newcomer, the triumph over the viral "Single Ladies” video was especially surprising. Even more surprising was Kanye feeling compelled to crash the stage and Taylor’s moment, running to take the mic out of her hand. While his words were said in defense of his mentor and collaborator’s wife, they also sealed the fate of any ongoing relationship he would have with Taylor Swift.

It was later discovered that Queen Bey herself was the most uncomfortable about the situation. 'I walk behind the stage and sure enough there is Beyoncé and her dad [and former manager Matthew Knowles] and she is crying. She was like "I didn't know this was going to happen, I feel so bad for her,"' revealed the former president of Viacom, Van Toffler, during an interview with Billboard. He had been executive producing the show at the time of the incident. Toffler also recalls the reactions of others, like Pink who was seated next to Kanye during the show. Regardless of how he felt, no one seemed to back Kanye's actions.

Since then, their relationship has been nothing but slams from both parties. Kim Kardashian, who we all know now as Kanye’s wife Kim Kardashian West, became wrapped up in the situation after Kanye and Taylor made their efforts to mend the relationship during the 2015 VMAs but then continued their mess with subtle “diss tracks” and their accompanying videos like Kanye’s “Famous” and Taylor’s “Look What You Made Me Do”.

While Taylor is more subtle, Kanye West's “Famous” bluntly raps about their beef and he credits himself with making her famous, also calling Taylor out of her name in the first line of the song. In the video, he even features a lifelike mannikin of her in a bed full of other celebrity manikins including him and his wife. The West couple claims that they had permission from Swift during a phone call prior to the single's release, Taylor threatened legal action until the heat eventually wore off.

Now that phone call has been leaked, Kanye and Kim have reason to be worried. The video shows Kanye dancing around the actual premise of the song while requesting Taylor’s support, proving that she had been lied to all along about the true content of the song.

However, Taylor spoke her truth to Elle long ago with the release of “Reputation”, the album containing “Look What You Made Me Do”. Her statement about why she’s given Kanye the hardest time since the release of “Famous” is simply, “ I got really sick of the dynamic between he and I. And that wasn’t just based on what happened on that phone call and with that song—it was kind of a chain reaction of things.”
