The novel coronavirus, or COVID-19, has altered life as we know it. More and more of us are going through our lives engaging in preventative measures like self-quarantine, self-isolation and social distancing to minimize the spread of the infection. On a larger scale, while some celebrities are singing covers of John Lennon’s “Imagine”, others are putting their money where their mouths are by donating to worthy causes to aid with coronavirus relief efforts. The latest to partake in paying it forward is celeb couple Kelly Ripa and Mark Consuelos.
The LIVE with Kelly and Ryan co-host and the Riverdale actor are in great company, as news of other celebrities donating money and/or meals continue to make news as beacons of hope during a somewhat uncertain time.
As social distancing continues and companies and organizations continue to close and scale back, these actions might prove to lessen the spread of the virus and help keep our healthcare system from being overwhelmed by too many patients and too little resources. However, these actions might also mean an economy that becomes negatively impacted.
So far, on a local level, this has meant pay cuts, a decrease in hours, and sometimes even layoffs as every day Americans struggle to learn when and where their next paycheck will come from, let alone their next meal to eat.
Hollywood has felt the adverse effects of these precautionary measures as well. Movies and television shows have closed up shop in terms of production to prevent the spread of the virus. One of those shows includes Consuelos’ hit CW series Riverdale.
The critical darling Euphoria is another show that has been temporarily halted in the wake of the coronvirus news. This is unfortunate for fans who might be on the edge of their seats waiting for their favorite series to premiere.
Consuelos and Ripa’s $1 million donation will go far in the efforts to combat the effects of COVID-19. According to People, the $1 million will be split between WIN, an organization that heads 11 women’s shelters in NYC and the purchase of much-needed ventilators for the state of New York.
Earlier today, it was also announced that singer business owner Rihanna will donate $5 million towards coronavirus relief efforts through her organization, the Clara Lionel Foundation. The Bajan beauty saw a need and became the $5 million change she wanted to see in the world.
Other celebrities donating money include celeb power couple, actors Ryan Reynolds and Blake Lively. The Reynolds will be donating $1 million to help food banks in Canada and the United States. Reynolds announced their gracious donation in an Instagram post on his personal page.
In signature Ryan Reynolds fashion, the Deadpool actor captioned his post, “I think we can all agree, Covid-19 is an a**hole.” The actual message on the photo he shared read, “Covid-19 has brutally impacted older adults and low-income families. Blake and I are donating $1 million to be split between Feeding America and Food Banks for Canada. If you can give, these orgs need our help.”
He concluded, “Take care of your bodies and hearts. Leave room for joy. Call someone who’s isolated and might need connection.”
