Serena Williams isn’t messing around. The 38-year-old tennis superstar was one of the first celebrities to practice social distancing – it’s been over two weeks since the 23-time Grand Slam winner announced that she was going into “solitude” for six weeks.
Serena updated her Instagram on Saturday with a reminder of the muscle machine that she is, but the message wasn’t asking the former World no.1’s fans to check out her body.
This was way more powerful. A caption directly referencing the novel coronavirus spoke to the millions now leading a new life from home.
Serena’s photo showed a simple setting. The star was seated on a floor and leaning against a wooden bench as gazed ahead – given that Williams is a Nike-sponsored athlete, she was kitted out in the sports brand’s gear from head-to-toe.
Showing hints of (but not flaunting) her steely-strong legs, Serena wore a cropped black pair of spandex leggings, plus a black Nike top and dark gray outer layer – eyes were likely drawn to the pensive face over the outfit or Nike sneakers.
Serena’s post came with a caption visible before any swiping.
“Now more than ever, we are all one team. #playinside #playfortheworld,” she wrote.
As to the message being delivered, it was a power one, also fully appropriate as the reality of the 11,000+ global deaths from COVID-19 hits the world.
“IF YOU EVER DREAMED OF PLAYING FOR MILLIONS AROUND THE WORLD, NOW IS YOUR CHANCE,” the message began, continuing:
“Play inside, play for the world.”
Serena’s solitude announcement was made on March 13. It read:
“Spending the next 6 weeks in solitude. Being a wife. Being a mom. Cooking. Cleaning. Spring cleaning. Face mask. Makeup tutorials. I’ll let you know how it goes…. stay safe everyone. This is serious. ??.”
Serena has been keeping her 12.2 million Instagram followers updated on her self-isolation. The star appeared from under a baseball cap in the early stages as she admitted that her plans to cook, clean, and work out hadn’t gone to plan – confessing that she hadn’t even “changed clothes,” Williams dubbed her first day of solitude as “useless,” although she did state that sometimes, “useless” is okay.
More recently, Williams took to Instagram in a series of fun tutu looks – her message was serious, though, as she revealed anxiety spikes that had caused her to side-eye her own daughter.
Friday saw Serena admit being “on edge.”
“I’ve actually been self-distancing for a really, really long time,” she said: “For probably like, two weeks now,” she continued, adding:
“Every little thing makes me really crazy. And my anxiety, I mean I’m just on edge every time someone sneezes around me or coughs.”
Then admitting that she only really hangs out with 2-year-old daughter Alexis Olympia Ohanian Jr., Serena revealed that hearing her daughter cough had made her snap.
“I mean my daugher. She coughed and I got ANGRY. I gave her a side eye. I gave her that angry Serena.”
Serena’s social distancing now sees her join the likes of megastars including Jennifer Lopez, Kylie Jenner, and Miley Cyrus.
