While promoting their new Hulu series Little Fires Everywhere, Reese Witherspoon and Kerry Washington made the revelation that both had auditioned for quintessential 1990s teen classic Clueless.

While the two never crossed paths during the audition process, Witherspoon mentioned in a Buzzfeed interview that they ended up becoming close through their work with the organization Time’s Up. Washington said they’re “in each other’s tribe,” and both support one another as owners of their own production companies.

But the actresses came close to working together on an untitled film before their Hulu series. “Reese and I met at a kind of workshopping meeting reading of a script at Leonardo DiCaprio‘s house,” said Washington.

Speaking of the unknown, could you imagine the 1990s classic with Witherspoon and Washington as Cher and Dionne? It could have been a thing. Witherspoon mentioned, “I auditioned so hard for Clueless. And I didn’t get it." “I did too!” added Washington.

It made sense for both actresses to have auditioned since both were in their late teens around the film's 1995 release.

At the time, Washington was just starting out, while Witherspoon was a veteran with a handful of films and TV appearances under her belt.

“We should do a remake,” laughed Washington.

Witherspoon made her first film appearance in 1991’s The Man in the Moon, which earned her critical acclaim. She appeared in several films throughout the decade before her breakout roles in Cruel Intentions and Election. She cemented her A-list status with Legally Blonde and her cameo on the classic sitcom Friends. Her turn in 2005’s Walk the Line earned her an Oscar for Best Actress.

While neither got to be in Clueless, both actresses did get to impart their 1990s teen experiences into their Hulu limited seriesLittle Fires Everywhere.

Washington says that she and Witherspoon “were weighing in on scripts” for the 1990s drama, with Witherspoon adding “we got to be sort of ’90s consultants because we were teenagers in the ’90s.”

The series takes place in 1997as the characters portraying the actresses' respective children are around the ages they really were at the time.

Witherspoon portrayed journalist and mother of four Elena Richardson while Washington played photographer and single mother Mia Warren. Mia and her daughter, Pearl, arrive in suburban Ohio, unravel both Mia and Elena's lives and families.

Witherspoon and Washington served executive producers on the series alongside acting. This led them to be heavily involved in the decision-making process for the female-led show.

The first three episodes began streaming on March 17, 2020, with subsequent episodes being released each Wednesday on Hulu.

While Clueless took on the hyper-wealthy teenagers in typical mid-1990s teen fare, Little Fires Everywhere dives deep into the topics of class and race that are still relevant today, but in the same time period.
