It’s been almost a week now, since the tragedies at Travis Scott‘ Astroworld Festival unfolded. The death toll is now at nine, as the Houston rapper continues to receive criticism, for his perceived lack of efforts, in stopping the festival in his hometown.
One of the victims who lost their lives on November 5, was was Rudy Peña. Recently, his brother in-law spoke out against Astroworld Fest, demanding accountability, and answers as to why these deaths happened.
Scholarship For Rudy Peña May Be On The Way
According to TMZ and Attorney Rosendo Almaraz, Peña’s family is working towards starting a scholarship in his name. Prior to his death, he was attending Laredo College. The scholarship would be launched at this school.
During Peña’s studies, he was a criminal justice major. He had goals of having a career as a Border Patrol agent. Currently, his family has raised $34,000, on GoFundMe. Some of these funds are going toward Peña’s funeral costs, and the plan for the scholarship, is to have close to$20,000 used.
Travis Hasn’t Paid For Peña’s Funeral Yet
In the aftermath of the Astroworld tragedies, Travis reportedly came out and said that he would cover expenses for the funerals of the victims. For the Peña family though, they haven’t heard from him yet, and are simply moving forward, in planning his memorial.
A rep for Travis ended up contacting TMZ, and stated that Travis has been “exploring routes of connection,” for each family. There is also an email available for loved ones of the victims, where they can reach Travis’ team.
Peña’s Family Filed A Lawsuit
Like many of the other victims’ families, the Peñas are also taking legal action. They recently filed a lawsuit, where they claim negligence, and gross negligence. This is regarding the lack of efforts by security, that didn’t keep Peña and others safe, on November 5.
There is reportedly over 32 lawsuits at this point, against Travis and Live Nation. Many anticipate that many other concert venues will not be working with Travis in the near future, and that endorsement deals will also begin to be ending. Fortnite has already removed the Travis emote character, from their video game. One of the biggest endorsements that Travis has right now, is with Nike. He has his own Jordan sneakers, which retail for high prices on resale markets, and sell out instantly, on release dates. As of now, it’s unclear if Nike plans to cut their ties with Travis.
