Meghan Markle and Prince Harry are expected to make their official exit from the royal family in under two weeks. The couple wrapped up a set of engagements with the royal family last week, and now new reporting is giving us a sense of what those final days were like for the couple.
According to an interview with Omid Scobie, a royal reporter who knows a lot about the couple, in Express, Meghan got quite emotional during one particular set of goodbyes.
Meghan’s last meeting was with students who had enrolled in the Association of Commonwealth Universities. Following the meeting, Meghan had a chance to say goodbye to some of the staff that had been with her through her entire time as a royal.
“Meghan stayed behind after the students left. It was a moment for her to say goodbye to some of the staff that had been so loyal to her for the past year for the last time,” Scobie said.
Although Meghan kept her emotions in check throughout the meeting, she couldn’t keep it together after it ended. “It was emotional,” Scobie said. “Meghan was really composed throughout the engagement but this was a moment to be vulnerable amongst familiar faces. It was tough, she was tearful. There were hugs, to say goodbye.”
Following the emotional goodbye, Meghan and Harry joined the Queen, as well as Prince William and Kate Middleton, for the Commonwealth Day service at Westminster Abbey on Monday.
Even Scobie seemed surprised by the lack of warmth toward Meghan and Harry at the service, suggesting that he expected the couple to get a bigger sendoff.
“I’ve got to be honest, I was quite surprised that there wasn’t at least a show of warmth in front of the world,” Scobie said of the service. “It was the Sussexes’ last day in a public capacity as working royals. Obviously they continue until March 31st but they are already back in Canada now.”
Now that Harry and Meghan have returned to Canada, it seems like they’ll be enjoying the freedom that comes with their exits from the royal family. Their sendoff may have been emotional, but it also seems like it was the decision that the couple had to make for their own sanity and peace of mind.
They are certainly leaving one life behind them, but that doesn’t mean that the journey ahead is going to be worse than what they’ve already been through together.
