Get ready for a soulful evening of pure R&B and vibes as Silk Sonic, Ashanti, Ari Lennox, Maxwell, and more are set to perform at the 2021 Soul Train Awards, which will be held in New York City at the iconic Apollo Theatre Variety reports.
Other artists set to take the stage is Lucky Daye, who is currently buzzing over the Maxwell-inspired track ‘Over,’ and Leon Bridges. Ashanti is set to receive the Lady Of Soul Award while Maxwell is set to receive the Legend award, honoring their work and contributions to music over the years.
Recently, the ‘Pretty Wings’ artist inked a new partnership deal with BMG, signing a multi-album global recording agreement between his Musze label and BMG. This is huge as this marks the first time signing to a new label in his twenty-five-year career after being with Columbia Records since 1994.
“I’m looking forward to this next chapter and new partnership with my label Musze/BMG and all that we can accomplish together,” said Maxwell in a statement. “The sky is the limit!” Tim Reid, BMG senior VP, repertoire & marketing, recorded music, added.
“Maxwell is an iconic creator of culture, and we’re pleased to enter into a partnership with him and Musze Inc. We look forward to being an integral part of the expansion of his artistry and brand moving forward.”
Each year, the show features a freestyle section called the “Soul Cypher” jam, and this year it gets even bigger and better. Participants this year include D-Nice, Musiq Soulchild, Jac Ross, Koryn Hawthorne, Elle Varner, and Tone Stith with their freestyles to be heard over the timeless Aaliyah record, ‘Rock The Boat.’ This past year, Blackground Records released all of Aaliyah’s albums to streaming services for fans to bask in nostalgia and continue to uphold her legacy with classic records. The cypher was started by former host Erykah Badu.
Leading the nominations this year is H.E.R., heading into the award ceremony with 8 nominations, including Song Of The Year, Album Of The Year, and Video of the Year. Following the ‘Damage’ singer is Jazmine Sullivan and Chris Brown with 6 nominations each, Wizkid and TEMS with 5 nominations each, followed by Blxst with 4 and Bruno Mars, Anderson. Paak (individually and collectively as members of Silk Sonic), Doja Cat, and Yung Bleu with 3 nominations apiece.
Silk Sonic recently dropped a new single entitled ‘Smokin’ Out The Window’ and is looking to drop their 9-track debut album “An Evening With Silk Sonic,” this Friday after numerous release date changes. After a successful 2021 as a duo and bringing back traditional R&B/Soul roots, one could agree the album is worth the wait. This means we could hear some new records live at the show.
Looks like this year’s categories are pretty major and have some steep competition as it’s been a great year for R&B.
Set to host the evening’s festivities once again is iconic comedic duo Tisha Campbell-Martin and Tichina Arnold. You already know they will bring the laughs and keep the audience entertained in their seats.
The show airs on BET on Nov. 28 at 8 p.m. ET/PT.
