The Real is known for having tough and sometimes awkward conversations on the show. Even though this Emmy award-winning talk show isn’t known for their heated debates like The View, sometimes the co-hosts disagree. For most of the shows run, the show consisted of 4 co-hosts until recently. In 2019, they introduced Amanda Seales as a new permanent co-host. If you don’t know who Amanda Seales is, where have you been for the past 4 years? She is an actress, singer, and author who is known for speaking her mind.
On a recent episode of The Real, they started to discuss dieting and healthy eating habits. Starting as an ad for Weight Watchers, Loni explains her part in the weight loss program. After showing off what she eats, things take a more serious turn when Loni starts to cry. “I did not know how to eat. Growing up in the projects, we just had to eat what we could. I know it sounds funny” Loni says as she’s fighting to hold back tears.
“A lot of women in the African American community, we don’t know how to eat because we grew up that way” Loni continues to say. Amanda, who sits right next to her, wears a somewhat judgmental face when this happens. Fans don’t know if she’s just shocked by Loni crying or if that’s just a natural facial expression she makes, but Amanda’s reaction started to trend online. This is not the first time fans have noticed Amanda making funny faces while one of her co-hosts are talking.
A few months ago, after Amanda and Jennie have a debate over Jussie Smollett’s hate crime case that happened a few years ago in Chicago, you could tell that Amanda was uncomfortable. that clip can be found on Youtube. Loni then goes on to say “I’m trying to tell y’all, thank you to WW because we wanted to do this to help our brother and sisters.” As the other co-hosts are attempting to confront Loni while she’s crying, Amanda keeps the same confused expression on her face.
Loni finishes up this discussion by saying “That’s the reason why we’re doing this it’s just to make yall aware of what’s happening in the community. You can eat and not starve and you can still lose weight.” A lot of fans reacted negatively to Loni’s claims. They felt like she was generalizing black people. In a recent interview with Madame Noire, Loni explained that she wasn’t speaking for all black women. She admitted that her comments were coming from a good place. Her only goal was to start that conversation in the black community.
