Tom Hanks Announces That He And Wife Rita Wilson Have Tested Positive For Coronavirus

On Wednesday March 11, Actor Tom Hanks took to twitter to announce the unfortunate news that he and his wife Rita Wilson have been diagnosed as positive for having the coronavirus:

"Hello folks. Rita and I are down here in Australia. We felt a bit tired, like we had colds, and some body aches.” Hanks said. "To play things right, as is needed in the world right now, we were tested for the Coronavirus, and were found to be positive."

Hanks is currently in Australia for the pre-production filming for Baz Luhrmann's Elvis Presley biopic, in which he plays the role of Presley's manager. However, he tested positive for COVID-19 where he was stationed. Deadline reported that ‘Warner Bros. is currently working with Australian health agencies to ensure the safety of the production and all those involved’. In a separate statement, the studio confirmed that "a company member from our Elvis feature film" had tested positive for COVID-19 (Tom Hanks).

Hanks, has kept a calm demeanor in his message and assured fans that he is doing everything he can at the moment and following advice from medical officials. He also makes sure to not add any panic to the issue and implies that there is only so much he can do:

"Well, now. What to do next? The Medical Officials have protocols that must be followed. We Hanks' will be tested, observed, and isolated for as long as public health and safety requires," he wrote. "Not much more to it than a one-day-at-a-time approach, no?"

He concluded his statement, saying that he will "keep the world posted and updated," and telling fans to "take care of yourselves!" Then, as he is known to do, the actor shared a photo of what appears to be one, lonely rubber glove which is somewhat of an inside joke with his followers. Hanks has been using his Twitter account to share photos of lost, solitary gloves, shoes, hats, and other accessories throughout the years. His post, aiming to keep fans and everyone reading calm amidst the global pandemic.

Production on the film Hanks was working on is being directed by Baz Luhrmann and does not yet have a title, but was set to begin filming on Monday. Warner Bros., the studio behind the movie, has said it spans “over 20 years, from Presley’s rise to fame to his unprecedented stardom, against the backdrop of the evolving cultural landscape and the loss of innocence in America.”

“The health and safety of our company members is always our top priority, and we are taking precautions to protect everyone who works on our productions around the world,” Warner said in a statement.
