When Katie Holmes divorced Tom Cruise – one of the most vocal members of Scientology – in 2012, her only concern was keeping her six-year-old daughter, Suri, out of the public eye.
It was difficult, given the high-profile nature of the split, which drew plenty of paparazzi.
Holmes told InStyle Magazine that she used trickery – including going to the park at odd hours.
“We were followed a lot when she was little. I just wanted her outside, so I would walk her around to find parks at, like, six in the morning when nobody would see us,” she said in the April 2020 issue of the mag.

Tom Cruise – who infamously jumped on Oprah Winfrey’s couch over his love for his new partner – and Katie Holmes were married in Italy in November of 2006.
Katie had given birth to daughter Suri in April of that same year.
Although she converted to Scientology and all things appeared happy between the couple, Holmes filed for divorce on June 29, 2016, telling People magazine through her attorney that her “primary concern remains, as it always has been, her daughter’s best interest.”
While New York City may not be the best place in the world to lay low, for Holmes and Suri, the Big Apple works.
“My biggest goal has always been to nurture her into her individuality,” Katie told InStyle. “To make sure she is 100 percent herself and strong, confident, and able. And to know it.”
Holmes, who shot to fame for her role in the teen drama “Dawson’s Creek,” moved to NYC because she and her daughter have “more fun” in that city.
“Yes, it’s a little too exposed at times, and we work hard to maneuver and navigate. But what I love about New York is that for me and my child, this is our vibe. When there are 25 things to do every night, it takes you out of your own thing.”
Holmes did have a romantic relationship with fellow actor Jamie Foxx that she tried to keep from the press as long as she could.
She and Foxx dated from 2013 until May of 2019, then split due to industry and family pressures that put the relationship on the back burner.
According to the entertainment news outlet “Entertainment Tonight,” Holmes and Foxx “never had a typical relationship. They have always been incredibly independent and their lives didn’t revolve around each other. They lived separately and in different cities and saw each other occasionally.”
The 41-year-old – who made waves as Jackie Kennedy in the miniseries “The Kennedys – stars in the upcoming drama “The Secret: Dare to Dream,” which is expected to be released in April, and is directing her second film, “Rare Objects,” after finally securing financing for the indy project.
Her first film, “All We Had,” focused on the financial crisis of 2008. Based on the novel by Annie Weatherwax, the movie focuses on a family forced into poverty after living a life of wealth.
“There was a line in the book, something like, ‘Superheroes drive broken-down cars, and they take their kid with them everywhere no matter what,'” Holmes said. “That was such a wonderful theme and a nice thing to put into the world.”
