Over the years, Hollywood Actress Dakota Johnson has proven that she is skilled at method acting.
A notable instance of her delivering such a body of work was in "Fifty Shades Of Grey," where she perfectly embodied the character of Anastasia Steele, a student entangled in a BDSM-filled affair with romantic interest Christian Grey.
Candidly, the actress' performance was so excellent that it made many assume that she stole fire from heaven's bosom to animate her character. Although this acting style has garnered her critical acclaim from fans, it sometimes comes with a special brand of consequences.
For one, taking drastic steps to portray character roles could endanger one's psyche beyond repair. In this regard, Johnson had to visit a therapist after her breath-taking performance for the paranormal thriller "Suspiria."
Therapy Sessions
"Suspiria" followed the story of a world-renowned dance company embroiled in a set of brutal murders that revealed a supernatural conspiracy within the academy.
Johnson went through rigorous training to ensure she acted her character (Susie) in the film just right. It took years of ballet training alongside other peculiarities of the film. As per Elle Magazine, the actress divulged that acting "Suspiria" made her visit the therapist.
"No lie, [Suspiria] f—– me up so much I had to go to therapy," she said.
However, when the news of her sessions got to social media, many started to assume she was psychoanalyzed. The star quickly dispelled the rumors in a press conference at the Venice film festival.
She stated: "First of all, I was not psychoanalyzed, and I hope I never will be." Johnson further explained that the reason for the visit was because of her "porous nature" that takes on other people's emotions and feelings.
Since then, many fans have argued that Johnson's comeback was an attempt to gloss over the film's effect on her. Ultimately, one might never know the truth behind it all.
Who did Johnson Portray In The Film?
Johnson portrayed Susie Bannion-- a ballet dancer turned witch at the Markos Dance Company. Unbeknownst to her, she was only allowed in as a sacrificial lamb to bring back the late Mother Suspiriorum, who headed the coven.
The movie took a dramatic twist in the end as audiences discovered that Susie is Mother Suspiriorum, who arrived on a cleansing mission to rid the coven of their corrupt and evil ways.
Johnson also played the role of Mother Suspiriorum in the movie.
After post-production concluded, "Suspiria" had an early debut in 2018 CinemaCon in Las Vegas. As per reports, the audience was so traumatized by the "intense and disturbing" horror scenes that half of them left mid-way.
If the reports are true, it would essentially establish Johnson's apparent need for therapy after filming the thriller.
Other Actors Who Went For Therapy After Filming A Role
Many other actors have also gone to therapy after finishing a movie role. In each case, they faced adverse effects that messed them up mentally. Worthy of note was actor Isabella Adjani's shocking post reaction to starring in the 1981 horror classic 'Possession.'
The star had intense nausea that made her throw up all over the subway. After then, Adjani entered a long winding struggle with her mental health and needed years of therapy to overcome the damage caused by her portrayal of the role.
Another instance was Val Kilmer's method acting in the 1991 film "The doors." Kilmer immersed himself in the mannerism and way of life of iconic singer Jim Morrison who inspired the movie.
The end effect was Morrison's inability to get rid of the character as he had almost mentally transformed into the "The Doors" frontman. He also had to attend therapy sessions in a bid to finally part ways with the character.
Johnson Ready To Create Star In Her Own Films
After starring in "Suspiria," Johnson revealed that she desired to start making her own films as she believes that the films that share her values were not available.
She said: "'I've come to terms with the fact that the projects I want to work on don't exist, so I'm going to have to create them for myself. 'I feel incredibly grateful that I'm in a position to do that."
Before a possible future career as an actor-cum-director, Johnson will appear in a couple of flicks. Some of them include "The Lost Daughter," directed by Maggie Gyllenhaal, "Am I Ok?" "Persuasion," Cha Cha Real Smooth," by Helmer Cooper, and "Raiff Daddio" directed by Christy Hall.
Additionally, Johnson signed on to serve as an executive producer with TeaTime Pictures. Fans can expect to see her upcoming body of works hit the cinemas soon.
